There was plenty of video of his offseason routines in Prince George when he was in junior. The kid has always had a professional way about training. He wouldn't have made the team last year if he wasn't in excellent physical condition. Rookies don't make NHL teams if they're not. He's just upping the ante this offseason by going into an even more intense workout regimen, but his training habits were never a concern. His durability and his ability to fit within a team concept with his aloof personality were my biggest concerns. I think he's answered the durability criticisms, and I'm hoping the longer he hangs out in this organization with the quality people he have the more he'll learn about opening up his personality and embracing that he's a part of the whole.

Perhaps you could draw a comparison to #4 in that regard. Vinny was a bit aloof personality wise- maybe less so now because he wears the C and deals with the media so much even though he strikes me as an introvert. However, despite what seems like the occasional lackadaisical play on the ice over the years, I don't think you can say he doesn't train like hell. Look at the streaks he's had. I believe he showed up to camp one year with sub 4% body fat. That's unheard of. That's like bodybuilder in cutting phase before competition low.

Anyway, great article Mike. I think Brett is gonna be fine. I do think had you swapped him and Skinner into the same situations the results would have been similar.

I'd like to see Connolly play the same role this season as he played at the WJC last year. 3rd line checker who will produce some offense down there. I realize he didn't play NHL competition, but he played the role competently, was defensively responsible and his offensive abilities are an asset. This would give Brett a regular shift and a chance to get comfortable with a role, from which he could have the opportunity to expand upon with performance.

I was hesitant to compare Vinny and Brett's demeanor, because I believe Brett's has more edge to it (Vinny's more happy-go-lucky), but the analogy did come to mind.

In my mind, one of the critical parts of this upcoming season is whether one or two of the group of Connolly, Brown, Conacher etc steps up and becomes at least a solid third liner, if not a solid second liner.
