When Ryan Callahan is splitting your D and making your goalie look like a rec leaguer for the third goal of the period, it might be time to pack it in.

This power play against the Kings is like watching a snuff film. Quick wasn’t even in the crease for a couple of these goals. How did LA get this terrible?

It’s amazing the hate he gets. Unreal. Give the guy a break. People tend to forget he was a 20 goal scorer and 50 point producer in his prime. Guys like Erne, Paquette, Killorn, and Cirelli have never seen and may never see. He still has the ability to score goals like this. He just does not get the ice time or opportunity because of Tampa’s depth.

This easily could have been a trap game with San Jose coming up but they destroyed them as you would expect. In hindsight I'm surprised we didn't start Domingue.

It only looks like hate because of your Callahan colored glasses. By any metric (fancy stat or otherwise) he is one of the poorest performers on this team, and really, should be our regular scratch over Erne, Paquette or other. That he is even rotated with other guys is a testament to how much Cooper values him.

Despite what you hope for, his 20 goals and 50 point abilities are long gone. Those of us who are critical of him, are so, because instead of 4/6 productive years of his 6M per contract, which is what should have been expected, we got 1.5, and had to watch as he gamely played his heart out, with diminished ability brought on by age and his playing style catching up to him.

For a team that seemingly can create a 15 goal/40 point player almost by accident, why Callahan's numbers have been where they have been over the last four years should be considered only Callahan's fault, and not the lack of a better centerman, as you have hilariously posited previously. It isn't because of Tampa's depth, or we would have seen more from him over the life of his contract. It's because he's old, slow, and oft-injured. He used to get PP time, it didn't help. He used to play on the 2nd line, then the 3rd, it didn't help. I believe you were lamenting his lack of opportunity last year while your boy was scoring on 5% of his shots.

Lastly, look somewhere else if you are trying to throw shade on Erne or Cirelli. Cirelli is on a 20 goal pace in his first full season in the NHL, and Erne has been dynamite since pulling a regular shift; neither of those guys have been doing it getting scoring line minutes, like Callahan did when he was in his prime, half a decade plus ago.

C'mon man, Cally is running on fumes. It's ok to admit it. It happens to every NHL player at some point.

Most fans don't actually hate Callahan, it's just that we realize he is not among Tampa's best 12 forwards anymore. There's no excuse for someone like Erne having to sit to play Callahan when Erne is clearly the better player.

When the possibility of a trade was occuring, Espo said this is exactly what would happen in terms of drop off due to injury. He was right on that and wrong on Voldemarty never being traded.

We were discussing in chat a few games ago how far Callahan has actually fallen on the depth chart, contract and legacy issues aside.

I would argue that just about every other forward on the NHL roster (when healthy) is generally playing better than Callahan. That's the 11 other forwards who played last night, plus Miller. Jury's still out on Martel, so I'll be generous and put him below.

You could make an argument that NHL-ready vets like Conacher and Andreoff would currently provide similar value at the NHL level. Verhaeghe and ABB are in the mix too, but I'll slide them down due to lack of NHL experience. They'll get their turns in due time.

So in my mind, Callahan's forward #13 on the NHL roster, with Martel, Conacher, and Andreoff very close.

This is how the economics work. You get positive value on cheap contracts for good young players -- Brayden Point, Andrei Vasilevskiy, etc. You get lousy value on expensive contracts for aging veterans -- Ryan Callahan, Dan Girardi, and half of the LA Kings roster.

It's not a personal insult (didn't we just go through this with Eddie Freakin' Pasquale?) but just the reality of the situation. If Ryan Callahan wants to play his way into the Lightning's top 6, he's better off talking to Emmett Brown than Jon Cooper.

Fun fact, Ryan Callahan was 7mos 5days old when Einstein "Einey" Brown first made history traveling through time October 26, 1985.
