Question ****warning.....have we been hacked****

I just received a private message that was titled "банкет Челяби" and sent by Steeld. Steeld had no posts and this name is not listed on the membership list. I deleted it without opening it.

UPDATE

under the heading of "Total members that have visited the forum today: 31" Steeld is showing a log on at 3:09am. However when you click on that name you get a notice that "you are not authorized". However every other name you click on you are sent to their page.

Something not right here.

Please beware.

That's strange. I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

If you get something like that again, please feel free to PM me so I'll see it sooner.

That account didn't make it through sign up so I'm not sure why the system allowed it to send PMs. I'll pass the info on to Tim to check out.

Tim knows about it as I sent him a pm this morning. The account was online at 3:09am and showed as being online. But when I clicked on the name it would not allow me to see it.

I was worried that others got the same message and if they didn't my thinking is that someone was targeting me.

I will let you know if it ever happens again.

I put "банкет Челяби" in Google translate, and put Detect language, and it says it is Russian for "banquet Chelebi" FWIW.

For all we know it could have been a hockey fan that searched around and our site came up for hits on Kucherov, Nesterov, Vasilevski, etc

I am still trying to figure out why they sent me a pm.

A big thank you to Tim and Sotnos.

Good sleuthing nutz as far as online translation engines go. Somehow they're always just a little lacking, like bootleg Viagra, or the Chinenglish instructions supplied with consumer goods--they can get you halfway there and then leave you hanging

банкет Челяби means Banquet of Chelyaba, which is the name of a tiny town in the howling wilderness of Siberia about which little or nothing could excite an urge to visit.

For anyone still reading, per the link below chelyaba is also a Bashkir word meaning "pit"--a title that could arguably apply to more places in Russia than just this one LOL. The place name could represent the founders' frank opinion of their town, or perhaps a reference to the remnants of a meteorite strike (not the Tunguska one). 'Pit banquet' sounds like Urban Dictionarese for a wild night of debauchery best left in college days, though it's not certain that's what this anonymous person meant.

Bashkir is spoken by an ethnic group related to Turks, primarily Sunni Muslims living near the southern border of Russia with Mongolia where it meets the Europe-Asia boundary. I saw no information at all about internet hacking or cyberterrorism, but didn't want to look too closely : p

Trying to sell you something. I doubt you were picked out, they probably had some sort of script going to PM all members, but you may have been the only active one they hit before they got booted so no one else has received one. It wasn't a security breech or anything like that.

The filter we have rejects hundreds of spammer sign-ups per day, it's insane how persistent they are. Imagine how many a big message board gets.
