Saint John got in the win column at the 2012 Memorial Cup by defeating WHL champion Edmonton 5-2 on Monday night. Lightning prospect Danick Gauthier had a deflection for his first goal of the tournament and led his team with six hits. Minnesota prospect Charlie Coyle was first star for Saint John with two assists. The Sea Dogs’ win means there is now a four-way tie for first place in the round robin tournament. The goal is to get an automatic bye to the finals. Saint John can do that by defeating Shawinigan on Wednesday, combined with Edmonton beating London on Tuesday. Vladislav Namestnikov and London can advance straight to the finals by beating Edmonton on Tuesday and having Saint John defeat Shawinigan on Wednesday. The loser of Tuesday’s game will play the loser of Wednesday’s game on Thursday in a tiebreaker game. The winner of that game advances to the semifinals.
