Many passionate responses. My take is the next few seasons will depend on the young goaltenders the team has committed to. If they step up then the team will be successful with or without #4. If they don't then the expected 50 points produced by Vinny L. will not make a great difference in the teams fortunes.

I would expect the cap savings to be put to work to improve the team. Otherwize, why would the owner eat this large sum? The team now has 10 million plus the Olund salary exemption to improve the team (if I read the various posts correctly). With many excellent young players ready to make the team a large chunk of that can be applied to free agents or trades with teams up against the cap.

For myself I shall remain positive and hope the goalies are ready for prime time.

I actually don't think Carle's deal is a mistake. At his age (and given current contracts being handed out to 38-40 year olds) Carle's deal is right in line with current defense prices.

So whats the lines looking like, what AHL'er is coming up to try and fill a huge hole left by #4 and what is our draft and Free agency strategy now?

Does SY further lighten payroll and trade a player(s)/#3 to move up to aquire the #1 or #2, stay at #3....or trade #3 outright for other assets/picks?

Very much agreed with the importance of goaltending. If you've got that it'll take you places. Look at the Senators, all the star players injured, a defense that gave up 35+ shots a game and they still pushed their way into the playoffs and upset the #2 seed. That's the quickest ticket back up the standings. Whatever gets Bishop back into form and can rub off on Lindback is the priority IMO and that includes steadying the defense obviously. Then our young guys will have more leeway to grow into their roles.

BH - Not going to allow a threadjack here, so we can agree to disagree that the NHLPA intentionally selects quitters for the Ted Lindsay MVP trophy; that the NHL gave a trophy for sportsmanship and high level of play to a single player after examining the play of hundreds, and they, in similarly inexplicable fashion, singled out a slimy quitter for the honor; and a smarmy little quitter also was masterful enough to quit and then go on to win the NHL award for scoring points--almost as if he had never quit. These are superhuman feats that so completely defy explanation as to enter the realm of the metaphysical, and therefore lie beyond the scope of discussion here. But when I think "quitter", the first thing that leaps to my mind is neither MVP, sportsmanship or more scoring than anyone else in the entire league. So we disagree there.

NoSpin: +1. Right freaking now is right. Results aren't everything, but they are the only thing. If SFY brings no Cup to TB, he will be recorded as an abject failure who ruined our visual image, alienated the fan base who pays for this stuff and cares about our history, and got rid of a fan favorite player. He's fired the goalie, the coach, the goalie coach, another goalie, another coach, the star franchise center,...who's next? The GM? At this point he's looking less like a man with a real plan than like a new doctor fresh out of med school, so confounded by a patient's symptomatology he's like a deer in the headlights, throwing this treatment at it, then when that doesn't work try this, then this, then that, then this, each treatment more harsh and draconian than the last,...then let's wait three years to see if it gets better....and if not, we'll try something else. Not saying that's what he is doing, just what it LOOKS like to me right now. Hope I'm 180 degrees wrong, and the plan will bear fruit right away. To wit:

DD - are you freaking serious? All this talent and skill, and we shouldn't dare be so bold as to anticipate maybe just cracking the TOP HALF of the freaking league next spring? We should just cough up the inflated ticket prices for yet another noncompetitive, regular-season-only campaign? I call BS. :: NJ accent:: WTF are we doing over here?

Pat: +3

Jester: I agree, referring to the team as "they" and the brass as "we" may be disturbingly worthy of note. Alternatively, it may just be a humble acknowledgment by Yzerman that the players are the ones doing all the hard work and he's no longer a player, he's an exec now, so he doesn't presume any longer to include himself in "we" when referring to the hockey team itself. That said, I prefer when coaches and execs use the inclusive term.

Alex: Thanks for that photo dude, that is beyond awesome to gaze at. If you look long enough, can you just smell that ice

I didn't give you my opinion. Didn't you read my list of questions at the top of page 8? I gave you SFY's quote. Don't confuse the 2.
