Default Lightning Hire Mike Vernon

Here's a piece of the release:

Quote:
The Lightning have hired former NHL goaltender Mike Vernon as special assistant to the vice president of hockey operations today, owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie announced. Vernon ’s duties will be to assist in hockey-related matters and to provide guidance to the team’s goaltenders.

“The Tampa Bay Lightning are thrilled to add a former Stanley Cup Champion to our staff,” vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. “Mike’s past experience and knowledge will be a true benefit to the organization and it will be critical to us as we continue to make changes within the team to improve it.”

What's the connection? Did he play with Barrie in Florida?

Not sure if that's the connection, but Barrie and Vernon did play on the 1999-2000 Panthers team together (along with Kuba and Boyle).

So Lawton and Vernon as the quasi GM tandem? Vernon the assistant? Do you not think it is a bit odd to hire Raeder and then bring in Vernon to "provide guidance to the team´s goaltenders"?

I just wondered about each responsibilities. Anyway, theres hope they are an upgrade I did not read too much discussion about Raeder arond here. And what the heck did Vernon do the last 6 years before he earned his new position?

Melrose talks a little about that. There's a link in the Vernon story at http://boltprospects.com/content/lig...es-mike-vernon

Sounds like "Other duties as assigned."

Did they can the whole Norfolk staff? I looked around for Schwab's name in news reports & couldn't find anything recent.

DC blogs a bit more about Vernon's duties:

Quote:
Owner Len Barrie said Vernon will be kind of a right-hand man and jack-of-all trades. Barrie said Vernon will be a sounding board on player personnel issues. He will be a scout, if need be, in the western part of North America. If a goalie prospect needs attention, Vernon could be dispatched there as well.

There is certainly a lot of confidence there, and it comes from familiarity.

Barrie said Vernon is the second-largest shareholder in Barrie's Bear Mountain Resort development in Victoria, British Columbia.

"I couldn't have done it without him," said Barrie, who played with Vernon with the Panthers.
