Default Hutchinson/Artyukhin Signed; Goertzen Fired

DC has some dramatic after-midnight notes: http://blogs.tampabay.com/lightning/...-busy-day.html

After Recchi was signed, the Lightning signed defenseman Andrew Hutchison to a two-year, one-way deal -- implying he'll be a Top-7 defenseman for the organization.

Also, the team received news that Artyukhin's contract has been cleared and signed.

And, Jake Goertzen, head scout was fired on Monday after being with the team for 17 years.

Len Barrie, surveying the new roster, predicts the Lightning will win the division.

And, finally, Darryl Sydor's name resurfaced as a possible waiver pickup since the team will have first dibs on the waiver wire.

Apparently the J.Smith deal fell through and Hutchinson was the backup plan.

They again have 7 defensemen w/ 1 way contracts. If they pick up Sydor, that makes 8. They need to stop signing contracts and start making some trades

Hutchinson was in the AHL last season. Former Hurricane and Predator. He's a power play specialist. Won't play many minutes -- most QB one of the PP units. Got a good hockey head on his shoulders, but isn't great in his own zone. Good thing is that he'll only play 5 minutes of ES hockey per game. He'll dress as the 7th defenseman and run one of the PP units.

Yeah... no Jason Smith. And we all got work up and then get Hutchinson instead. What a let down.

D-corp: Kuba, Ranger, Carle, Picard, O'Brien, Niskala, and Hutchinson. The media and message boards will have a field day with this.

Jake Goertzen was a friend of BoltProspects. Sad to see him leave, but no one seems to be untouched by the new ownership. Good hunting, Jake.

Hutchinson had a great year for the Hartford Wolfpack last season. He was team mvp i believe. The rangers were scared to bring him up at the end because he had to go through waivers and they knew someone would pick him up. that's why he was in minors all year.

Recchi? bluh

NAS carried 8 defensemen on their roster all season. It's not common, but it can be done if you carry the 23 player max. TAM hasn't done that for a couple of season because of payroll limitations. They max you can dress for each game is 20.

Usually a team carrying 23 has 14 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies, and scratch 2 forwards and 1 defenseman

If you carrying 8 defensemen, then you just have 13 forwards, scratching two defenseman and 1 forward.

OK looks like he'll have no problem taking us back to the 23 player roster limit.

While Goertzen has been upfront about the draft not netting the desired return over the past few years, lack of top-60 picks will do that. And his mid-late round finds have been as good or better than most teams in the league.

I'm not happy at all about this.

Dear God, anything but that. He's AWFUL, been awful for a few years now, and he makes $2.5 mil. Both teams that have signed him after us have been eager to dump him, there's a reason.

Agreed on all of that. That is tough to hear, I had no idea he'd been here since the beginning. Good luck to him! They're really cleaning house, hope they know what they're doing.

IMO, only one of Niskala or Hutchinson will make the team and the other will end up in Norfolk.

And be subject to waivers?

Something doesn't add up here. DC reports in his blog today that Lundin also would be subject to waivers because he played 81 games last season ...

Quote:
Lundin is an interesting case. He was 22 when he signed his contract in July 2006. Players who sign at that age, according to the CBA, can avoid waivers if they play no more than 70 NHL games through their first three years. But Lundin played 81 games last season, hence he needs to clear waivers if he is sent to the minors. Seems Lundin is just the kind of player another team would snap up. So expect to see him with Tampa Bay unless he just tanks, though great training camps by Niskala or Smaby also could change the dynamic. Niskala, of course, has a European transfer option, meaning if he doesn't make the Lightning, he can be sent back to Europe with that team assuming a good part of his contract.

Niskala's Euro transfer is an interesting option.
