You donít get the full amount of Callahanís salary as cap relief, just the amount that his salary that when added to your opening roster puts you over the cap.

Itís an important distinction.

Yes, but in theory they could spend right up to the $81.5 million. They won't of course, but they could.

The Lightning have signed forward Gemel Smith to a 1 year / 2-way contract for the 2019-20 season.

Smith is destined for Syracuse. He played last year with Dallas and Boston.

Great article by Joe Smith in The Athletic about Luke Scheen.

Seems the guy has something to prove and showed what he could do with some training when he was in Vancouver. He thought he was getting a 1 year deal with the Cunucks and then we made the offer, and the rest is history.

If he really can come here with the attitude some are saying he now has he could be a steal if he helps get us over that hump.

I'm legitimately concerned that our system isn't built for d-men like Schenn who aren't puckmovers and aren't comfortable at all jumping into the play. He's an old school stay-at-homer who handles the puck like it's a hand grenade and I'm not sure those really fit well here.

With that said... pair him with Hedman and he's probably fine. Victor can cover for a multitude of sins.

I'm curious to see how they manage the defensive pairs in camp. I see two main options.

Option 1:

Hedman - Cernak
McDonagh - Sergachev
Coburn - Rutta/Schenn

Option 2:

Hedman - Rutta/Schenn
McDonagh - Cernak
Coburn - Sergachev

I think option one would give us the optimal top 4, but gives you a weaker 3rd pair. Option two counts on Hedman carrying his partner somewhat, and gives you a stronger bottom pair.

I can't fathom why they'd split up McDonagh and Cernak.

Default D Pairs

I was thinking :
Hedman Sergachev
McDonough Cernak
Coburn Schenn/Masin
Masin is out of waivers.

Camp and preseason should be very competitive for third pair of D and who rides shotgun with Hedman, sure hoping itís Sergachev who should be bigger and stronger. Rutta and Schenn battle for spot with Coburn and Foote and/or Masin make strong stands to stay with big club. Witkowsky stays in Syracuse.
