Default nice draft summary for why picks are where

round by round recap of trades that set the draft order. Gratton for this second still seems the most egregious:

not the site I would have thought to look for this info, but it is well organized and easy to bring back the memories of trades past.

That Gratton trade will haunt us through June, if not further.

So heading into the draft, Tampa has the 1st (which we'll just safely assume is Stamkos), a 3rd, 5th, two 6ths and three 7ths.

Do you guys think that Tampa will try and trade up utilizing the 6ths and 7ths to replace the 2nd (unlikely) or 4th round picks, similar to what they did with Ottawa last year, except the other way around?

The 2nd for Gratton is going to hurt, but at least they could maybe pick up a 4th in what is considered a deep draft.

Default One Other Possibility

There is another possibility to get a 2nd round pick. It will be difficult. And that is hope the Flyers make it past Montreal into the conference finals. In the Prospal trade we got a conditional 3rd round pick. That is, we get their 3rd round pick unless they make it to the conference finals. If that happens it becomes the 2nd round pick. It would be late in the 2nd round, but it would be in the 2nd round.

So to all you Flyer's haters, hold your noses and hope for the best.

The Flyers pick is in 09, though.

The only way to move into the 2nd, IMO, is to offer a 3rd and 09 2nd to a team, or the 09 first. Maaaaaaaybe someone takes Kuba for a 2nd, but I think that was only possible for a deadline deal from team desperate and/or in a bidding war.

Aside from the Quick draft, I don't know if TB has NOT tried to get more picks by moving a pick in the following year.

TB has had moderate success with late round picks. And they tend to rate some character guys higher than other teams, so they'll have desired players in the later rounds. Combine that with their apparent new-found willingness to swing for the fences, and they could use some late round picks and there could be some interesting players coming our way.

Like Avery said, I could see them moving up a little, but likely not higher than the 4th.

Gaahhh... I HATE that No.31 pick not being Tampa Bay's right now.

Well at least Gratton was super productive last year and made it all worthwhile.
Magic Numbers 2/19 - playoffs - 17 (Carolina), 1st round home ice advantage - 27 (Boston), Conference - 27 (Toronto), Division - 29 (Islanders), Presidents - 30 (Calgary)
