From Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch, who is now with the Blue Jackets in Sunrise:
Quote:
The BB&T Center looks about half full. Not much atmosphere in building. Big difference from last night.

Yesterday, the Florida Panthers beat the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Today, they fire their coach.

Huh.

Anyway, Gallant's out.

Friedman: Tom Rowe, the team's GM, will take over as head coach.

The Panthers are 11-10-1.

Edit: I should note that Florida also played tonight in Carolina, and Carolina won the game. Gallant was fired after the game ended.

From Canes Country (SBN blog covering the Hurricanes):
Quote:
Gallant met the media after the game. And then apparently was trapdoored. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this

As if this night wasn’t any more bizarre, Gerard Gallant is currently waiting at the PNC loading dock for a cab to pick him up.
There's no news from the Panthers' beat writes, because neither of them are on the road trip.

The hockey media world is in full-on meltdown over this. The Panthers are the laughingstock of the NHL again.

Now confirmed that assistant coach Mike Kelly has also been fired.

Oh, and then there's this:
Quote:
Oren Koules: So, about firing a successful hockey coach (103 points) in the state of Florida with an overly jiggered lineup, not smart, trust me I know!!

You're fired, go find your own way home.

(AP photo)

And here's another AP photo showing a Hurricanes employee helping Gallant to load his stuff in the taxi.

You can't make this stuff up.

From the guys who know:
Quote:
Darren Dreger: Florida ownership taking a beating privately around the hockey community. Gallant is a highly respected and well liked hockey man.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie: Not that it ultimately matters in terms of decision, but safe to say FLA players largely disappointed/unhappy at Gallant being fired.
Quote:
Pierre LeBrun: Re: Gallant fired. Always felt like the fix was in even before the season started. Unfair in my books.

Man. That's absolutely awful imo. What a complete shit organization. Fire the guy after he meets with the press at a fucking away game and then tell him to get home on his own?! Good lord.

They should feel absolute shame for doing that to Gallant.

Unless things have changed in the last 4 years at RDU, he most likely had to spend the night there (Raleigh). There are no flights to Lauderdale, Miami, or even Tampa that late.

Way to go Turds! Stellar organization for sure!
