capgeek indicates that Helenius is NOT exempt from waivers. I didn't think he was. But, I still haven't gotten confirmation from the organization.
IMO, if the organization knows Helenius is not exempt from waivers, then my speculation is that (a) they have him penciled in as backup, or (b) option to sign and trade as part of an acquisition for a Bernier-type goalie-of-the-future. I think it is high risk to try to push Helenius through waivers. Some team like Columbus would surely jump on him.
