Default CHL Game Night: 9-20-19

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

Halifax Mooseheads 3 @ Saint John Sea Dogs 4

W Maxim Cajkovic, SJ: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM, 2 SOG, 3 Hits
18-19 Totals: 48 GP, 10-20-30, +17, 36 PIM

Cajkovic and the Sea Dogs started their season on the right … paw? … with a 4-3 win over the QMJHL and Memorial Cup runners-up from last season. The Sea Dogs won only 13 games last year. Cajkovic has the skill and role - and hopefully teammates - to have a big season this year.

Rimouski Oceanic 1 @ Baie-Comeau Drakkar 2 (SO)

C/W Gabriel Fortier, BC: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM, 5 SOG, 9/17 FO, 0 Hits
18-19 Totals: 68 GP, 35-48-83, +41, 27 PIM

Drakkar captain Gabe Fortier opened his 2019-2020 season with a primary helper on B-C’s only goal in a 1-1 tie against Rimouski. The Drakkar were able to keep likely 2020 No. 1 overall pick Alexis Lafreniere off the scoresheet - at least in “normal” hockey. He scored in the shootout. So did Fortier, though, as B-C’s first shooter. They’d add another to win the shootout 2-1, too.

Rimouski is without Lightning prospect Radim Salda, who finished last season with the Oceanic and can still play in juniors. The 2018 seventh-rounder went home to the Czech Republic this season after spending the previous two in the Q (Saint John, Rimouski). He’s with HC Stadion Litomerice in the Czech second league and has an assist in four games played.

Western Hockey League

Halifax Mooseheads @ Kamloops Blazers

D Quinn Schmiemann, KAM: 0-0-0, -1, 20 PIM, 2 SOG
19-20 Totals: 58 GP, 5-23-28, -7, 30 PIM

Schmiemann’s season-opener went a bit awry when he was charged with a major for cross-checking, subsequently got in a fight, then was ejected. The Lightning 2019 sixth-rounder has a chance to hit 40 points this season if he can maintain a prominent role on the backline. Spokane was leading the game 3-2 early in the third period. Eli Zummack, fresh off playing for the Lightning in the Nashville prospect showcase and in the early days of NHL camp, has an assist for the Chiefs.

Note: Nolan Foote (Kelowna) remains with the Lightning though he’s expected to be assigned to the Rockets as soon as next week.
