Default Globe And Mail is Nuts

The Globe and Mail claims Tampa is courting Mats Sundin:

What's even nuttier is they speculate they could make it work cap-wise by keeping Halpern on IR all season and sending Stamkos back to juniors.

I hate to discount rumors anymore, but that truly makes no sense.

As an avid reader of the G&M, they are not the type of newspaper that reports baseless rumours. And Barrie's comments on EE's blog certainly don't come across as anything close to denial. I do have a hard time buying Stamkos is headed back to the OHL.

That would make me mad. Sundin is a great player, but it would be stupidity to bring him in for one year.
Are they concerned about stammer struggling for a bit without Halpern there? Is Torts back?

Yup. Again it's hard to discount anything anymore, because the OK boys are the ones planting this stuff IMO.

Mats looks so happy & relaxed in that picture on EE's blog, I really wonder if he wants to play at all anymore if that's how he looks a few months removed from hockey.

My guess is Mats plays. Where? Well, heck, isn't that the question we're all sick of by now. If he was going to retire, I think he would have done it long ago.

Stamkos really needs to play in the NHL next season. It would be a huge letdown after all of the hype.

Honestly, if the Lightning have indeed contacted Sundin, I suspect it is in an effort to drive up his asking price and reduce the cap space wiggle room of whomever he does end up signing with.

In the few months they have run the team, this ownership has proven it won't hesitate to mess with other teams' plans, such as trading for soon-to-be free agents and taking them off the market (didn't work out with Ralston), then threatening to make an offer sheet on Meszaros to force the Senators' to sign or trade him.

I'd be shocked if Sundin does sign here, but as others have said here before me, nothing should surprise me with this owner.

Kinda hard to drive up the asking price when VAN has had an offer of $10M/yr on table for Sudin since July 1.
