Default Windows 7 problem

Had to replace an older machine running with a new one with win7. This unit is used primarily for typing reports from dictation from a couple of adjusters. The problem is, win7 will not play the digital recordings. Tried at least six different media players and downloaded every codec I cpuld find. No luck. Copy the same file to a mem stick and any of the xp machines play it with no problems or adjustments.

Thoughts? I'm ready to reformat the machine with xp pro but that will be a short term fix as xp will not be supported much longer.

Have you tried VLC?

That's supposed to play just about anything..

Also what you use for the recordings and anything you know about the format would help.

Tried VLC and several others. None worked.

The problem is win7, they have left out about half of the audio codecs that were included in XP in media player. I found a fix, downloading an old program called "Ace Mega Codecs Pack".

Too bad MS didn't explain this up front, would have saved me around 20 hours or so. But doing so would have made win7 look like a stripped out product. Also would be helpful if their website was up to date, their instructions to fix this refer to a box to mark in options that doesn't exist in media player 12. But twelve has only been around for 20 months or so.
