Completely different stakes.

United needs a trophy to validate the past two years before Tata and Almiron leave. Same as Stamkos, Hedman, etc. needing a Cup. Feels the exact same way.

Something really wrong with this league when Seattle can take half the season off and still finish with a bye in the playoffs. You pull that crap in any other league in the world and you’re in a relegation battle.

Meh I prefer intrigue to foregone conclusions. Decision Day in MLS > Championship Sunday in EPL

River advance to the Libertadores final in the most controversial way possible. First of all, their coach was suspended from the sideline and proceeds to cheat by talking to his assistant via walkie talkie. Then he sneaks into the dressing room at halftime in a very obvious "disguise." Then after going down a goal, they score off a handball, then get a penalty in the last minutes thanks to VAR discovering a handball by Gremio (Pity Martinez scored it to clinch the semifinal on away goals). Infuriating. Bunch of fucking cheaters.

Boca advance to the final as well, so we now have the dreaded/awaited Superclasico for all the marbles in South America. *orders a defibrillator*

They scored first, which being an away goal should have made the rest of the match purely academic with Palmeiras needing 4 goals as result, but of course some drama had to be injected with two pure gift goals on shambolic defending. Palmeiras nearly got a third before Benedetto (rumored MLS target) scored his third golazo of series, making it 2-2 and 4-2 on aggregate.

First leg is next Wednesday at Boca. Second leg Nov. 21st.

(actually scheduling might be up in the air)

NYCFC killed Philly tonight in their MLS playoff knockout game, so Atlanta draws NYCFC in the semifinal. I'm not in love with the matchup given the first leg is in Yankee Stadium where NYCFC only lost a single game all year.

Gritty, gutty effort by Atlanta to win Leg One 1-0 in that POS of a pitch at Yankee Stadium. Now the setting switches to MBS, where Atlanta should feel comfortable going against any team in the league.

Portland just bounced Seattle on PKs in an absolute classic. To be honest I might have enjoyed that even more than winning the cup.

Boca-River leg 1 delayed til tomorrow because of this.

Supposed to rain the same then, though. The pitch actually drained and doesn't look as horrible now, so ironically I think if they had just kept to the schedule they could've gotten the game in, albeit not a great quality one.

It didn't rain and they were able to get the first game of the final in. Pity Martinez nearly scored on a free kick and another volley later on, but Boca staked out a 2-1 lead in the first half despite arguably being outplayed a bit. An unfortunate own goal (though likely would've been a goal anyway as it was well struck by Pity) equalized it in the 65th minute. Benedetto had a chance to win the game in the final minutes on a two on one with Tevez but he was stuffed by Armani. Both keepers made some pretty incredible saves. Since away goals aren't a tiebreaker in the final, this sets up a true final, one game for the trophy in El Monumental in a couple weeks.
