Sorry, I had this notion in my head but didn't express the connection.
I thought that Malone was injured during his entire career here

OK. I'm willing to step up and say my mind is changing. I knew Cally was a good player but I'm seeing more skill than I thought I'd see. He's looked terrific. I still feel justified in worrying about his size and likelihood of injuries, but I'd be OK with five years now. I still think $5.5M is the limit, though, and the NTC is problematic. I would hope Yzerman could find a way to structure any movement clauses to favor the team's flexibility in the last two years of the deal. At least get a list of teams he can be moved to.

He'd never agree to 5.25, or without a full NMC. He wouldn't take that money as the captain of the New York Rangers, I can't imagine he'd do that here, or else Yzerman's lore increases several notches.

Even if he did, 6 years is way too long. He's going to get his massive pay day, a team like Buffalo will give it to him. I think the only purpose of this thread, is for us to question whether he deserves the kind of contract he is asking for. The scenario is pictured quite perfectly in my mind, he puts in his time here, thanks us and moves on to greener pastures.

I don't know if Cally would take 5.25m or not, but I think you might be surprised as to what Yzerman and Vinik would be willing to pay.

He's passing his audition with flying colors so far. I predict some wailing and gnashing of teeth if this keeps up.

Im betting 5 years, between 5.75 - 5.9m. Something like 5/24.5m

It would take quite quite a bit for me to be surprised at this point. The problem is that pesky cap thingy
