One of the biggest games on the college hockey slate Friday night was #5 Minnesota-Duluth hosting #1 St. Cloud State. It was a big challenge for the Bulldogs, winners of only one game in their last five (six if you count the exhibition loss last weekend to the US NTDP U18 team). UMD goalie Hunter Shepard (undrafted) made 25 saves in the first two period to keep the score knotted at 1-1 until his Bulldog teammates scored a pair of unassisted markers in the 3rd to knock off the top-ranked Huskies and hand them their first conference loss on the season. Suddenly, St. Cloud has loss three of their last four, including the exhibition game against the US NTDP U18 team.

UMD improves to 12-5-2 (5-3-1 NCHC) while St. Cloud State drops to 14-3-2 (6-1-2) on the season with these two teams squaring off for a rematch on Saturday night.

Mavericks netminder Evan Weninger (undrafted) allowed just one goal on 34 shots in the loss. Denver improves to 13-4-2 (5-4 NCHC) and looks to complete the weekend sweep of UNO Saturday night.

Lightning blueline prospect Alex Green missed his 11th game on the season due to injury.

A week after knocking off then #9 Penn State, the Golden Gophers rolled into South Bend and upended the new #9 Fighting Irish in front of a national televised audience on NBCSN. Bolt prospect Sammy Walker scored his 5th goal of the season and fellow Lightning prospect Ryan Zuhlsdorf helped set up a Rem Pitlick’s (NAS, 2016 3rd round pick) short-handed empty netter with 11 seconds remaining.
