Default Crunch Hire Benoit Groulx as Head Coach

From Dan D'Uva:
Quote:
As reported moments ago #InTheBooth on @ESPNSYRACUSE, the @SyracuseCrunch have a new head coach and his name is Benoit Groulx.
Rob Zettler has been relieved of his coaching duties and Groulx will take over.

Groulx's stats are here. He's spent the better part of the last 15 years as a head coach for the Gatineau (and originally Hull) Olympiques of the QMJHL.

Now official from the Lightning:
Quote:
TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have hired Benoit Groulx to become the head coach of its American Hockey League affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, Crunch General Manager Julien BriseBois announced today.

Groulx, 48, was the head coach and general manager for the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League during the 2015-16 season, guiding his team to a record of 46-19-2-1. The Olympiques were defeated in the 2016 QMJHL Quarter-Final by the Moncton Wildcats four games to two.

Groulx has worked 13 total seasons as a head coach in the QMJHL with the Hull/Gatineau Olympiques, posting a career record of 460-293-18-59. He led his teams to league championships in 2003, 2004 and 2008, earning QMJHL Coach of the Year honors for the 2003-04 season while coaching the Olympiques.

Not that surprising, Zettler had to deal with a lot of injuries, but the team just didn't look that motivated this year.

Don't really know anything about Groulx, but his Gatineau teams were always fun to watch.

Yeah it wasn't the best roster to work with but they still underperformed quite a bit. Here's hoping it rejuvenates the farm.

Syracuse Hockey ‎@syrhockey

Cull and Alexander will remain on Crunch staff. Zettler offered another job in organization

Actually a pretty good situation. He has obviously done some good judging by how prepared our call ups seem to be (so I'd like to keep him around), but the team horribly underperformed.

Wonder if he'll take the offer. I like to see that, when you under perform at your job doesn't necessarily mean you aren't a valuable member of the organization. Props to him if his ego can handle it.

I wouldn't necessarily say underperformed because of all the injuries (Both to Syracuse and Tampa). Just look at man games lost due to injuries/call-ups:

Tambellini: 11 games
Gourde: 11 games
Peca: 11 games
Taormina: 15 games
Blunden: 27 games
Erne: 17 games
Vermin: 39 games
Blujus: 15 games
Angelidis: 23 games
Koekkoek: 16 games
Paradis: 27 games

That's 8 out of Syracuse's top 10 forwards and 3 of their top 5 defensemen missing 10 games or more over the course of the season. That doesn't even include the Drouin ordeal that they also went through. It's almost kind of impressive that they got to only eight points out of a playoff spot. My real issue was how slow they started the season when everyone was relatively healthy. They were something like 10-10 in their first 20 games and was playing very unmotivated hockey which to me falls on the coach.

They should be really good next season with Point coming in and hopefully having Peca, Vermin, and Erne healthy.

Hopefully Vermin doesn't take the money to go back to Switzerland and sticks around at least another year.

The Swiss want both him and Richard.
