I've been enjoying the discussion.

I agree that Recchi will be on the third (or second line) on opening night.

And I agree that Gratton and R2 start on the fourth line.

However, I don't agree that Roberts is going to play on the third line or even make the team. Yes he was signed for his leadership abilities, but he has to prove in training camp that he can still play after missing more than half of last season. Not unlike Dave, who was signed with the best of intent and sent down during the season when it was discovered that he couldn't play, the same could occur with Roberts.

That makes Jokinen more likely to stay.

Recchi can keep Vrbata honest, too.

I'd agree, Donnie, if it wasn't for the fact they were having Roberts make phone calls to UFAs on behalf of the team when chasing Rolston, etc.

Also, to get a guy to give up playing in Ontario, which is what he was set on doing, there must have been some guarantees to get him to sign down in TB.

There seems to be too much importance around him by the organization for them to subject him to the meritocracy filter - which may have left with Feaster/Torts.

How do you explain Karlsson if there was such a thing as "meritocracy"? Or SOB's benching as well as Roy's for the last 1/4 of the season?

Just like any business, their "chosen ones" will get ahead; the only sports where "meritocracy" prevail are golf (other than the gimmick tournaments) and singles tennis.

There's a very small Halpern update at the end of DC's Rumble article today.

Quote:
HALPERN UPDATE: Center Jeff Halpern, who in June had surgery to reconstruct his right knee, damaged while playing for the United States at the world championship, said doctors told him he could begin light skating by Sept. 1. That, he said, should put him on course for a December return.

"I took the crutches away about two weeks ago," Halpern said. "As soon as that happened, I got the green light to do everything strength-wise. It's just a slow process."

Default Hope

Let's hope Halpern can come back in January, he makes this a much better team.

It is real nice to see other comments in this site, thanks guys. I am also glad to see I am not the only one who thinks Roberts will not play very much. although, I did not remember reading about Roberts calling UFA's, thanks for that info Chad.

I wonder if they will institute a meritocracy or not. Letting the players actually compete for spots and ice time only makes this a better team and helps them ice the best team possible.

It might make sense to wait to make any deals until closer to training camp in order to see how other teams rosters are setting up and to see what teams need to move players in order to alleviate cap concerns.

does Khabi nave a NTC or NMC clause in his contract? If so that might bind Chicago, and no I do not think we need Khabi back, but it might force Chi to make other deals to alleviate their cap problems.

Pretty sure he doesn't.

For the record, NMCs are very uncommon. Supposedly Vincent has one (though I'm not sure if I've seen that confirmed) and McCabe is the most famous case. I can't even think of any others, though there must be a few more.

Yeah that honestly made no sense, why he got that I will never understand. He's a decent enough player (sometimes), but he's not deserving of that kind of pull whatsoever.
