Reality

The Senate is not going to convict. So you are going to impeach and find d him not guilty. Thatís not a winning formula.

Thereís a difference between opening an inquiry and calling for an impeachment vote. I agree calling for the vote now would be stupid, but there are arguments for opening an inquiry. Whether you call it an impeachment inquiry or not, though, itís painfully clear House Democrats need to have a series of televised hearings that give the American people the movie version of the book... which is to say the video clip Cliffís Notes version of the Mueller Report expanded to cover an inquiry into (at a minimum) Trumpís financial crimes and cover up/obstruction activities that have taken place since the release of the report by Barr and his confederates.

It requires a degree of stagecraft and discipline that is tough to muster for such a young group of Congresspeople, but itís what theyíve got to do.

What last week shouldíve shown all of us is that a majority of Americans donít read and therefore donít know whatís in the report and either believe Barr and Trumpís spin or are just confused into learned helplessness. When they find out whatís actually in that report, Trump and Barr are royally fucked.

My presumption is the only time limit is the end of the Congressional term. If thatís the case, any inquiry could last into the lame duck session after the election if it came to that.

Itís a gamble, but the argument for it is as follows:

1.) Itís never the wrong time to do the right thing. As a matter of principle, when 1,000+ prosecutors tell you Trump should be in jail thereís absolutely a moral argument for opening an inquiry.

2.) You avoid demoralizing the Democratic base. Done correctly, you should be able to amp up base intensity among Democrats. Will you do the same with Republicans? Maybe, but the Democratic base is bigger, IMO. What the Midterms showed is that if intensity is roughly even among the bases, the race tilts Democratic (see also #3).

3.) Anti-corruption is the killer app to win independents and moderates, especially in the swing suburban districts thatís Democrats cleaned up in during the Midterms. If you can use the hearings to underscore what a corrupt administration this is, you should maintain or expand your advantage from the Midterms.

4.) Legally, as I said, it makes it tougher for the White House to fight subpoenas. That means more and better evidence can be shown to the American people to make the case.

5.) Trump sucks under pressure. Look at the number of unforced errors he makes as the spotlight grows hotter. Look at how much more lawless he acts the more heís pushed. He may self destruct under the spotlight of an impeachment inquiry. I really believe that. Heís so stupid and so lacking in poise heís liable to crack like an egg and end up resigning in disgrace like Nixon did.

Oh, and in case you all missed it, Trumpís impeachment lawyer Emmet Flood (who also represented Clinton during his impeachment) just gave his two weeks notice. Seems kind of odd timing... unless youíre a real, serious attorney trying to avoid getting tangled up in Trumpís lawless shit show like McGahn and Dowd already have.

Reality is that McTurtle doesnít advance anything to the floor of the Senate that he disagrees with. So the House should cease operating? Hardly.

So you want the Senate, by a majority vote, to say he is innocent? Because that is what will happen.

Again, thereís nothing saying you have to vote for impeachment now if you open an inquiry.

Laurence Tribe also suggests that the House could structure their proceedings to issue a non-binding verdict and censure along with the referral for impeachment whenever they finally do take that vote.

Cmon, this isn’t so hard. The gdamn Republicans drug out Benghazi for years just to smear shit on Hillary in anticipation of her candidacy. Pete’s right. The Dems need to craft some must-see TV that actually sways people to get off their asses and vote this turkey out. Make it crystal clear that it’s the only way for him and his entire criminal enterprise to face justice.

Nope. Want the House to do their job and illustrate that the Senate is the problem. Let it die in the senate along with all of the legislation McTurle won’t bring to the floor.
