Default Witkowski/DeKeyser Watch

Ok... back to prospect watch....

Now that Western Michigan's season is done, Luke Witkowski's college career is also over. Obviously, Yzerman has bigger fish to fry at the moment, but the Luke Witkowski contract watch is now full on.

... and with it ... the watch as to whether his roomate and defensive pair Danny DeKeyser will opt out of his senior year (like Sustr) and go pro -- and if so -- where will he sign... wonder if the coach that Yzerman hires is a factor for DeKeyser?

Wouldn't the whole Boucher thing count us out?

Not really. If they bring in Cooper, a coach who has shown he can help rookies elevate their game, or another highly respected coach it may still draw DeKeyser's eye.

A new coach has no preference on the current depth chart, everyone would(should) have a fair chance at a roster spot.

Do we/can we fit that piece to the puzzle? We already have youth here (Hedman, Aulie, Gudas), Sustr to get a "chance" and Barberio is knocking on the door ready to go. Personally I'm not getting my hopes up and if I am right I won't lament as our "problem" that may lose us DeKeyser is not really a problem at all.

Yzerman has a 2-for-2 track record in making the first year of the 2 year ELC retroactive to the current season. (See Brown, JT and Sustr, Andrej) This serves to fast-track the prospect to their 2nd contract, and usually means the prospect gets to play on the NHL roster for the balance of the current season which translates to NHL salary money on top of their signing bonus. That's very attractive.

DeKeyser should seriously consider Tampa now that Cooper is the HC.

The player obviously wants to come play here. He's torn between a couple of clubs, but you never turn away a prospect like that just because you have some depth. Our blueline depth is better than pre-Yzerman era, but we need MORE. Much more. Get that boy a Tampa jersey, and let Cooper sort 'em out.

OK... SFY.... Now that you got Cooper official... hop that plane to Toronto and make a Witkowski-DeKeyser double signing your next move!

Don't that's an automatic sign he does there. Still think it's Detroit or Tampa although the Leafs and a few others have been kicked around.
