Default Preseason Game 2 at Carolina

People might not have realized there's a game tonight. There is. Down 3-0 in the second period.

Sergachev looks really good. I'm starting to believe the hype that Cernak may just find a way on this roster if there is playing time for him. He hits everything that moves and has improved his mobility. Katchouk is so good defensively for a young forward.

I've been disappointed from what Erne and Koekkoek have shown so far. Both are kind of coasting out there.

Nice to see the PK pick up right where it left off.

This is probably a stupid overreaction to two meaningless games, the latter of which was pretty much the Syracuse Crunch's roster, but we have to remain on guard against the kind of feckless sleepwalking we saw two seasons ago.

With the benefit of that hindsight, I would be surprised if
1) Stamkos, Hedman, Kucherov, Callahan, Palat, etc let that happen within the room
2) Cooper doesn't bench the culprits
3) JBB doesn't change personnel the lineup if for whatever reason the complacency comes back.

These guys have to be acutely aware that this is the last hurrah for this group, which up till now, has underperformed their talent level. Coburn, Girardi, hell, Stralman all have a real good chance of not being here next season.

The good news, is the forwards most likely to coast (lookin at you Killorn and Johnson), have younger replacements coming up. That wasn't the case a few years ago. It's a real possibility that we have too many forwards for openings, which should shorten the leash considerably for guys that have a predilection for trading on their almost accomplishments.

I know every expert from shore to shore is not predicting the Canes to do well this season, but for some unknown reason, and now reinforced by two losses to them in preseason, I have an uneasy feeling about them being a thorn in our side.

My concern is two fold. The PK is still abysmal in both games. No change in philosophy of how to play a 'system' for better results. Still the passive four in a box mentality which against good teams leads to putrid results. I understand it's only the pre-season - however this was a primary focus and reason for the change of coaches.
The "D" is still play in front of the offensive players on the other team allowing them to front the goalie and create havoc in the crease. Again I was hoping to see a change in the "D" scheme / style but that was not on display.

More of the same.

We were 0 for on the PP and that is a direct reflection of the Canes pressing allowing no room in the zone. Not the passive style we are using. We are still that perimeter - Stammer at the dot and Kuch on the other side. We need bodies at the net and driving the net for production to be solid against teams of this nature.

" Feckless Sleepwalking perfect analogy Kind of what we saw from the almost full starting lineup in the first preseason game.

Yes, It's only preseason but unless they change the style and/or scheme of the PK and defensive methods our results will be limited when the real season starts and another year of our window will be swept out into the bay with the red tide.

Both Boston and Toronto are knocking on the door. Toronto picks up a "d" player and voila they look to be better than we are. Boston if the rooks take a step forward combined with their "D" they could leap over us quickly. The clock is ticking for this squad.

Hoping for change but nothing showing so far.

Preseason games at this juncture are geared to get everyone some ice time and prospects some NHL experience. All D except Sergachev who looked good will be in Syracuse or cut. No top six forwards played and Cirelli, Gourde, and Andreoff looked reasonably good. Foote looked awful and based on last nite not ready. Sergachev again played right side so barring injuries suspect D is already set. PK and PP not being designed or worked on in first week of camp. Everyone relax.

Kids showed up tonight against the veterans from the Preds. Smoked them 5-1 with, essentially, the Syracuse Crunch and a handful of TB youth like Koekkoek, Sergachev, and Erne. The Dominguinator looking stylish in net. Proud of them.
