So how does the buyout thing work? Do they get one buyout per year?

This is one of the two compliance buyouts (no cap hit) each team got at the end of the last lockout. We used our first one on Vinny. After this year (or if a team already used their two compliance buyouts), all buyouts will have a cap hit I believe, right?

Yep, all buyouts except for the two compliance buyouts each team gets will count against the cap in some way. I don't believe the rules were rewritten on regular buyouts, so it's 2/3 salary remaining paid over twice the number of years left as a cap hit.

I read that Malone will get something like $833,000 and change for 2 years, which is $1,666,000.

Which is 2/3 his $2.5 mil remaining over twice the number of years left (1). So the compliance buyouts are calculated the same way.
