I agree. When I just saw the headline I thought "okay-cool." When I saw that 2.14 million raise I said WOW. Kind of a ballsy move by Yzerman – or he’s extremely impressed by him as both a player and a leader/person. That high of a raise for the extension makes it like - almost paying for future potential. Last season was great - 65 points with a string of 13 or 14 game point streak, 3rd highest on the team. But that was one season... like I said potential. Hope he meets the new expectations now and stays at the very least consistent with last season's point totals (if not better).

Must have been his hatter the final game of the season that put him over the top!

Earlier this week, I almost posted the question: Should they look at extending Purcell? My response was going to be that I wouldn't think about doing it until the all star break as he is really streaky and can disappear for games at a time. I'm not convinced that one of the kids couldn't take his spot next year at a cheaper rate.

Ah.... It just occurred to me... By extending Purcell now, Yzerman took Tampa's only significant 2013 UFA off the market. He pretty much went ahead and gave him what he would have gotten on the open market. So, now Yzerman's spring and summer is just signing draftees and restricted guys and maybe re-signing a few guys like Thompson.

Spring? Yes. 2012 draftees, undrafted prospect FAs, and extended one or two pending UFAs. There's a number of signees that happen in March/April. See Namestnikov, Gauthier, Brown, Killorn, etc. Hopefully Dekeyser And Witkowski will be spring signees.
