Default Ft. Hood Shooting

Officials: 11 killed, plus gunman, in Fort Hood shootings

Quote:
(CNN) -- Eleven people plus a gunman were dead and 31 wounded after the gunman opened fire Thursday on a soldier-processing center at Fort Hood, Texas, officials said.

The gunman was a soldier, and two other soldiers have been detained as suspects, Army Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said.

The slain gunman was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, a law enforcement source told CNN. Licensed in Virginia, Hasan was a psychiatrist who previously worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center but more recently was practicing at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, according to professional records.

Ten of the other dead also were soldiers, while the remaining one was a civilian police officer who was working as a contractor on the base, Cone said.
This is totally senseless. If it can happen there it can happen anywhere. And you'd think a psychiatrist dealing with PTSD would be the least susceptible to doing this sort of thing.

That's got to be the most shocking part.

How terrible for all the dead/wounded and their families. Senseless is a good word for it.

...or the worst. Maybe he couldn't bear the idea of having to see it first-hand? I'm also wondering about the 2 supposed accomplices in custody? What a shame.

I wonder if Obama is going to use this as a reason to not increase troop levels in Afghanistan? (Please realize that this is not an attempt to bring political arguments into this discussion.)

I don't see what it has to do with that. I also don't get the impression that Obama doesn't want to send more troops, and he certainly doesn't look for cheap excuses for his decisions.

A former Fort Hood colleague of the shooter said Hasan would frequently make "outlandish" comments.

"He said maybe Muslims should stand up and fight against the aggressor," retired Col. Terry Lee told Fox News. "At first we thought he meant help the armed forces, but apparently that wasn't the case. Other times he would make comments we shouldn't be in the war in the first place."
So let me get this straight.. the guy says things supporting the enemy, and against the mission.. nothing happens..

But if he said something about having a boyfriend..

If he was saying stuff like that and no one said anything...wow. Not sure I really buy it completely though, reading the other articles on Fox there's a lot of weird hearsay in them trying to paint the Muslim=bad picture.

It sounds now like he was acting alone btw, CNN says the other guys brought in for questioning have been released.

Leave it to Fox News to go rooting around for the "Muslim who hates America" angle. Even a right-wing toady like John Cornyn is saying that no one should be jumping to conclusions and yet there they go.
