No one's throwing picks around in a deep draft year like they were last season. Kolzig is a Cap for life. My guess is that he retires this year if WAS resigns Huet, but Huet could easily walk to another team this summer. Kolzig is insurance for WAS and Kolzig is on record as saying he wants to stay with the Caps.

Is Kolzig hurt?

No... Kolzig's not hurt. Just the Craps figured "Why wait" and secured him now, rather than be somewhere in the shadows like other teams would be during the off season to sign him. Granted, he still has to be signed, but they get first crack at it and by not re-signing Kolzig... they have room now for a pretty outlandish deal... IMO he was the only legitimate No 1 goalie out there but as Bolthed stated, it is apparent that we "Got our number 1 goalie" on the cheap in Smith... or at least thats how it'll get spun

I've already discussed Ruutu's warts, but damn, at least he's still passable as a top6 forward. Andrew Ladd is an even more disappointing first-round draft bust.

You want to know why the Lightning are in the predicament we are in?

- Can make a goddamn fair trade to save our lives.
- Can sign our players to reasonable contracts.
- Can draft for shit.
- Can figure out how to spot free-agent talent that fits our system.
- Couldn't spot a goalie if we were given Ken Dryden's eyeballs.

Add that up and there's just no wonder we're headed back to the dungeon.

Richards' contract is a big anchor, that TB is no longer dragging. His trade value has obviously been diminished by it. I still don't fault Feaster for the contract though. I know Richards' contract made him a possibility for only a handful of teams, but there's no way anyone can tell me how a RENTAL like Hossa (and that is ALL that he is) could possibly fetch a FAR superior package. It's mind boggling. The Thrashers got two former high draft-pick forwards who are already in the NHL, a 2007 No.1 pick in forward Angelo Esposito and a 2008 No. 1 draft pick.

They most certainly did not have to trade Hossa. In fact, they made it known that they were willing to keep him and get nothing. I believe that is why they were able to do so good. I don't know why you think what I said is so ridiculous, as it seems we are in agreement that we got reamed for Richards and Waddell got a good package for Hossa.

CTLightning26

Of course they HAD to trade Hossa.
They tried for months to sign him.
The difference is they were dealing with teams that did not have to pay Hossa $23.4 the next three years. They are just getting him to push them over the top. There was real competition as well.
If Richy was playing a little better and he was a UFA, we would have been able to get something like that.
They were in a good spot because the teams they were dealing with felt they were one player from the Cup.

Yeah, but THAT kind of package for an elite rental? You're supposed to get more for a guy that teams know they get to keep. We didn't. We got a package similar to what Wash gave Pitt for Jagr. And I think we've crippled the near future for the franchise.

But back to Hossa. I think a lot of us thought Waddell was one of the worst GMs in hockey after his deadline dealings last season and the roster he put together for this season. But lemme say, he blasted one out of the park on this deal. As bad as he did in giving up the farm last season (and at least it DID ensure that they made the playoffs), he turned it around and bolstered Atlanta's future today.

If only our trainwreck of a GM could figure out how to leverage a freakin asset, we might have a future too.

We are in agreement pretty much completely... we got reamed, ATL made out.

I think it's pretty clear that Jay is just a puppet at this point. And like I said before you have no LEVERAGE when you say "we are going to trade this person no matter what, no matter how shitty of an offer we get, we are gonna dump him like a piece of trash"... well, you're not gonna get shit back.

That's where we differ (slightly), Backy. I think it's just Jay being an incredibly sucky GM. And I think it's his reputation as a lamb to the slaughter when it comes to trades. I do NOT think it was a matter of leverage. Everyone knew by the last couple of days that Hossa and Richards would be dealt today. One's a rental and the other has a bad contract. I just can't fathom how one gets a huge package from a team that KNOWS it cannot re-sign him and the other gets middling crap. To me, it's got to be the decision-makers' fault.

I fail to see how what the Trash got for Hossa and what the Lightning got for Richards are that much different. I think there are a lot of people in "that's all we could get for him??" mode around here.

Colby Armstrong makes me barf. He's a gutless puke, and is perfect for the Thrashers lineup. I think Esposito will be a dud. So does PIT apparently. I'm kinda neutral on Christensen, but given the dismal state of centers on the Thrashers roster, he could actually be a 2nd line center. The only thing to make that trade more perfect for the Thrash is if PIT had included Gary Roberts.

Those guys are nothing IMO.

Of course, the 2008 1st rounder is sweet.

True
you could say Halpern and Jokinen are better than Christensen and Armstrong
you can make the argument that Smith is a better bet to be successful than Esposito.
Guess the late first-round pick makes Hossa deal slightly better.
