View Full Version : Brett Connolly
Just a little update...
Connolly scored twice in the first period tonight. He's now up to 39 goals on the year - despite missing 2-3 weeks due to the WJCs and a sprained knee.
Third period still to go.

Forgive my NHL 11-influenced ignorance on the matter, but is Connolly projected to be a playmaker in reality? Or a sniper?

He's projected to be like Patrick Marleau. Marleau's just a solid scorer all-around, similar to Lecavalier, production-wise.

What do you guys think the chances are of Connolly playing center and Stamkos on the wing down the line? The Marleau + VL comparisons pretty much make the case on their own.

I'd rather see Connolly on Stammer's wing. Or see them both on Brad Richards wings :coolwink:
Connolly's never played center, as far as I know.
Connolly finished the night with 2 goals. They lost in a shootout; Connolly didn't score in his SO opp.
Connolly can play LW or RW but hasn't played center as a junior. Marleau has played LW and C in his career, and also point on the PP.
I'm betting he's still two years off, so I wouldn't rush to pencil him into any particular spot in the lineup yet. I think Ashton and Panik are closer to the show because they're grown-man strong already, and not afraid of traffic.
I'm happy with the season Connolly has had in re-establishing himself statistically. Other than the concussion he suffered before the WJC's, he's stayed pretty clean health-wise and his numbers reflect the type of production I suspect he would've put up last season without the hip problem. His game still needs to evolve, though. He's not going to walk into the NHL and be a guy who doesn't have to dig in the corners. He's plenty big enough to put the muscle on and he sure is a big enough punk, attitude-wise, to be a pain in the neck along the wall. That's the next step for him: the transition from passenger to worker.

I'd prefer Stamkos to stay a center and I doubt Connolly moves from the wing. I personally wouldn't be opposed to moving Vinny to wing, but that would seem unwarranted unless a player like Richards came to Tampa ;)
Pffft... not bad... for a bust.. ;)
His goals-per-game rate is actually better than the WHL's goal leader, by .02.
Tyler Johnson (undrafted) has 47 in 63 games. Connolly has 40 in 52.
I was watching a recorded Oil Change the other day and an Oilers fan called into a radio show and said they should have drafted Cam Fowler instead of Hall because look how he's doing in Anaheim.
Let's not be so short sighted, people.

He's only tied for fifth in goals scored in the WHL. Also, he is tied with undrafted Prince Albert forward Jonathon Parker. Sounds like a bust to me.

Since you brought it up, what's the deal with Johnson? He put up decent numbers last year too.
Listed at 5'9" - is probably smaller. Light. He was there during the Tokarski years, too.
He'll be in someone's camp.
Devos in the Q is an undrafted overager putting up huge amounts of points. He'll be a UFA somewhere, but these guys rarely end up being NHL impact players. It does happen, though.

ahhhh, that's one thing that I didn't pay attention to. I read that he attended the Wild's camp. Supposedly, he has really good speed and a good two way game.
