Matt is a huge Obama supported or at least was in 2008. However this ending is not very kind. Leaves one with the impression that until we change our laws and start to regulate again nothing will change.

But it certainly it is very well done. I did not get all the way through it late last night, but it was quite interesting...

i was shocked that Obama would "recycle" many of the people that refused to look at the big picture or had their hands so dirty is beyond me.

I saw Inside Job a while back and forgot to mention it. It's pretty ridiculous how nobody's career is held accountable for anything. The other thing that kills me (and what makes economics completely UNscientific) is how nobody in that field of academic study gives one hoot about potential conflicts of interest. Scary.

But what I really wanted to talk about was Rango. One of the few CGI flicks that isn't in 3D, but the writing was hilarious, the character design so original, the graphics spectacular.. It was better than I expected going in even with the good reviews. Love those cute little mariachi owls!

I saw Scream 4 over the weekend and for what is was, a cheesy slasher flick, it wasn't too bad... it spoofed on itself several times which was entertaining and had a little bit of a twist but oh did it ever come with a "ton-o-cheese"... and I don't mean that good cheese you pay extra for, I mean the kind you get at the concession stands on your nachos!!!!

kid, #1 was my fav as well, if you like the Scream franchise, you will definatly enjoy the newest entry.

I saw a Tweet this morning stating "Insidious (http://blastr.com/2011/04/and-most-profitable-film.php)" is currently the top grossing (new) film of 2011... I thought it was... OK. I saw all of the twist coming and found no real suprises in it. However, I am also the guy who figured out Willis was dead right after it happened so... BTW I don't point that out to brag, just that I pay way too much attendtion to continuity type details in movies (= geek).

Huh. I totally disagree. I saw it last night, really enjoyed it. If you love comic books and/or Norse mythology, it's a good time.

Thought they did a really good job given the time constraints (could easily be two movies) and did an even better job casting. The acting was pretty good. Chris Hemsworth is very talented. Tom Hiddleston as Loki was perfect.

I'll watch that girl read the phone book for three hours and love every second :biglove:

I'm not as familiar with Thor as I am other Marvel properties such as X-Men, Spider Man, etc. but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. With Kenneth Branagh at the helm I expected it to be more character driven as opposed to a lot of mindless action. I hope that they keep the same team together for the inevitable sequel.

This is setting up very nicely for The Avengers. Captain America should be a good one, also.

Tonight on PBS (that wacky bastion of socialist propaganda :D) there is a documentary about the Freedom Riders of 1961, the (essentially) kids whom were taunted, beaten and mercilessly abused when busing throughout the deep south to protest segregated interstate transport and facilities. Technically this isn't a "movie" but since its only been showing at schools, churches and art houses, I figured id give it a small nod.

I got to see this last summer on my own bus tour, where I met many of the people in this film (Riders, government officials, etc.). For those interested in history, its a nice little view.

It definitely takes some liberties, but as with all comic book movies, it operates in its own continuum. The sooner you think of it that way, the quicker you'll enjoy it.

The thing I love about comics is the ability to expand, contract or rewrite the universes in which they exist. And when it's done well? You get X-Men: First Class.

It'll absolutely erase the total bomb that Wolverine was from your mind, if you saw that trainwreck that singlehandedly ruined everything good about Gambit and Deadpool.

Saw X-Men last night and it truly is first class - great stuff. Great performance by Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr - fantastisch! Also, best use of that one f-word yer allowed with a pg-13 movie - had no idea that little scene was in there - got a big kick out of that one. Tip of the cap to Kevin Bacon's performance as well.

Super 8 - Mint! Great summer popcorn flick and a total tribute to all those 80's Spielberg flicks (incl 2 from the 70's - jaws and close enc). Who knew a train crash could be so chaotic and kinetic? The scene where the kid explains dry bushing and why you need 14 different kinds of gray was close to the heart as well. ;-)

Was originally looking forward to Green Lantern, but, man, some of those reviews (esp the guys on AICN) are just killin' it. Glad you liked it, Jester, maybe I just have to level-set my expectations appropriately before going in. And, of course, those of us who grew up watching the Superfriends battle the Legion of Doom all know where this one is heading.

You should still look forward to it. I saw it last night and really liked it. Of course, I am a GL fan, but after seeing the movie, most of the critical reviews ring hollow to me. They seem to be based on just not enjoying the source material in the first place. What a surprise - if you don't like the Green Lantern, you probably won't like the movie. Who knew.

And I don't care what anyone says, that WAS Hal Jordan. I feel like the criticisms of Ryan Reynolds aren't fair, because as far as I know the books? That was Hal effing Jordan to a T. Modernized a bit, but they had to do that.

My only criticism is that the film could have been a little longer to flesh some of the parts out a bit more and Blake Lively's performance, although not bad, did feel a little wooden.

So, this is a 2012 movie, but curious if anyone who's read the books has any thoughts on the casting. The Hunger Games (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1392170/)

They have a pic up of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, looks like a good pick to me. Only one that stood out to me as odd was Lenny Kravitz as Cinna. :wtf:

Sorry to bring up a movie that's months away, but it's nothing but 12 year olds on the IMDB boards. :( I hope to heck they don't screw this movie up, it could and should be epic.

ChaseSpace

Cinna is supposed to be more conservative of a designer and character so I can see Lenny pulling it off. Stanley Tucci as Caesar is an interesting choice.

I saw Midnight in Paris last weekend. If you're like me and enjoy Woody Allen films up until, say, the early 90s, then this is one you are going to enjoy. It's definitely not top shelf Allen, but a nice return to form. He plays with reality in a similar way that he did with Purple Rose of Cairo, and has a lot of the Allen trademark features; conversations that both mock and revere intellectualism, a self-effacing Allenesque main character, you know the routine. If nothing else, Allen is almost continually inventive, even if he is reworking old ideas. Owen Wilson was surprisingly likeable, playing the Woody Allen role.

I'm psyched for Captain America this weekend. Looks like Joe Johnston didn't forget he was the director of The Rocketeer. Everything about it looks cool, which I haven't been able to say about a Superhero movie since Dark Knight.

I saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes the other night and enjoyed it a lot. I think fans of the originals will be especially pleased. They did a nice job re-invisioning the 'rise' without stomping all over the originals, like re-makes tend to do.

This movie was two halves for me. The first half which wasn't anything special, and was actually a little boring. And then the second half,
'the coming of age of Caeser', which will make this movie a repeat favorite of mine forever.

I'm not sure who is responsible for Caeser's character, half CGI half Serkis? But awesome job, and the director turned a pretty dull plot into a worthwhile viewing.

Yeah, definitely two halves. I thought the first half was saved by two things. One, by keeping things moving. Two, the main plot driver is an all-too-real possibilty.

Horrible Bosses was good, I still need to see Cowboys & Aliens. Avoid Zookeeper like the plague.

My wife got me with the Beastly is a horror/monster movie trick.... I was not amused. As a punishment I made her watch Hall Pass with me :D
Heh, she fooled you! I just thought it was boring, I tuned out half of it. It's a shame because the book is great and is from a very talented Florida author. Only reason I watched it. When the most interesting thing in a movie is one of the Olsen twins, you know you're in trouble.

About the only thing released this year (besides Harry Potter) that I want to see is Super8, looks interesting.

Things I've seen lately that were new:

Catfish (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1584016/) (Documentary) - Basically - boy meets girl on Facebook, his brother & friend are filmmakers and start making a documentary about their relationship. When things start seeming a bit "off", they decide to take a road trip to go find out what's going on and...it goes beyond someone misrepresenting themselves, put it that way. Weird, weird documentary. I knew the twist and still liked it, just an incredibly odd situation, and I don't think it was faked or set up at all.

13 Assassins (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1436045/) - Samurai movie with none of that slow-mo CGI kung fu crap that I despise. :p Just a good movie with an hour-long (!) battle sequence that somehow still creates a good story & good characters. The villain is a real dirtbag, have never wanted a character to die so much. :D I understand the director mostly creates really graphic horror movies (Ichi the Killer) but this is a straight up, old fashioned samurai movie with good & evil, honor & dishonor, etc.

Of Gods & Men (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588337/) - I doubt any of you are in danger of watching a movie about monks in Algeria, but this was too slow even for me. ;) Great scenery and wonderful acting with one touching & unforgettable scene, but way too many scenes of the monks praying & such for my taste. Gives you a lot to think about regarding faith and life, but edited down a bit, it would've been better.

Winter in Wartime (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0795441/) - A young teen gets involved in the Resistance when he helps a downed British pilot in WWII Holland. This got mixed reviews, but I really liked it, had a few unexpected twists. 2008 movie but I think it just came out on DVD here so it works here. :p

I watch a ton of movies when there's no hockey, there's also a series by Morgan Spurlock of the best docs of the past 20 years running on Current TV (Al Gore station, you get the picture of what kind of docs they are) that I'm getting a lot of suggestions from.

I've got 13 Assassins, haven't seen it yet. Of Gods & Men I already saw, it could have been a lot more interesting and paced better, but it was something to think about regardless.

It certainly did, one of the most thought provoking things I've seen recently. Maybe I was just not in the right frame of mind to watch something that slow paced. The acting was wonderful, it was very moving and had some great scenes but after a while every time they cut to a mass scene I was like  and fast forwarded.

You know what scene I meant that was really unforgettable: the dinner where they listen to Swan Lake. Powerful without a word being spoken.

Captain America was good, but the problem they seem to be having with the superhero films, Green Lantern suffered from it as well is it seems to be very split, first half explain backstory second half kill bad guy. I mean I know they need to explain the backstory but it comes across a bit disjointed IMO. Iron Man managed to explain it while tying it in very nicely, and these just didnt manage it as well.

Horrible bosses was alright.

Cowboys and Aliens was just alright. Could have been more awesome but I'm not gonna complain too much.

I'd argue it was less than alright. It was two very different movies stitched together that only managed to even be somewhat coherent (read: almost not at all) because it has the same actors throughout.

Really disappointing. A rental at best.

So....I just got done watching a Netflix movie by the title of Yellowbrickroad. Just came out on DVD after doing the festival thing for a few months, and I'm at that weird point where I don't know if I absolutely hated it or freaking loved it. Beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, amazing concept, poor execution.

It was sort of the anti-Blair Witch, where instead of slowly building to a big "Gotcha!" moment at the end, it was interesting and just kind of faded off in the last 30min.

I don't know, I recommend it to those of you who like to ponder "What the hell did I just see?" for a couple hours after a film. If anyone does see it, feel free to message me and explain what happened. :)

One Morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire - 572 people - walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness. They left behind their clothes, their money, all of their essentials. Even their dogs were abandoned, tied to posts and left to starve. No One knows why. A search party dispatched by the U.S. Army eventually discovered the remains of nearly 300 of Friar's evacuees. Many had frozen to death. Others were cruelly and mysteriously slaughtered. The bodies of the remaining citizens are still unaccounted for. Over the years, a quiet cover-up operation managed to weave the story of Friar into the stuff of legends and backwoods fairy tales. The town has slowly repopulated, but the vast wilderness is mostly untracked, with the northern-most stretches off limits to local hunters and loggers. In 2008, the coordinates for the "YELLOWBRICKROAD" trail head were declassified...

Lately I have been seeing good press for "i want someone to eat cheese with"; Jeff Garlin and Sarah Silverman were the names. AWFUL. I'd rather ride in an eevator that someone cut cheese in than see this abomination.

Seriously! Page after page of filler that you'll never watch. It'd be nice to browse good* stuff only.

*Obviously, this is subjective.

Not only that, but of all you can scroll through, it's not everything that's available for streaming. I'd like to browse it all if possible instead of having to use my not-so-awesome brain to remember movies I want to see.

Don't know if this had been said, but Rango was fantastic. Little more adult than Pixar flicks, but same level of quality.

Slightly off topic...but if you guys want to see a CEO driving his company into the ground read this http://blog.netflix.com/2011/09/explanation-and-some-reflections.html

It really does help to take the time and rate everything and how often you watch the genres. I've found lots of movies and shows to watch that way.

Also, all those people who left/cancelled Netflix will be back. It's too great a service not to and still cheap.

I'm pretty sure it's not a real documentary. It's too perfectly set up and the dudes have to be the dumbest guys ever, not to mention they're able to capture all the pivotal moments among many other things. It was interesting, tho.

Saw a movie the other night called Valhalla Rising out of the UK (I think from there, anyway.) Never heard of it before but it drew me in with its imagery and certain plot ideas. It's about mute fighter who takes out a Norse tribe only to find himself traveling with Christian Crusaders to the Holy Land. Although, they may or may not actually make it there, that's kind of the point. The mute dude is said to be "from Hell" and then the story line brings you to what could be his home, they never really say. I think that's what drew me in; really made me think and figure stuff out.

The whole movie probably had under 150 lines of dialogue and a very ambient soundtrack, so it may not be great for anyone who needs those pieces to stay interested. It was kind of a mind f*** of a movie. I liked it, say 7 out of 10.
