I knew that Cammy's days were numbered. I wish that he went somewhere else though. Nice move by Lombardi to move up into the 12th spot.

Stamkos, eh? This kid any good? Was he on our radar? :)
Lookin GREAT in that sweater, Steven!
Red Line Report on Steven Stamkos:
"Universally hailed as the top prospect available this year. An exciting, skilled pivot who has no discernable flaws, either on or off the ice. Tremendous kid with superb character, humble and team-oriented. On the ice, uses his world-class skating ability to create chances on the fly with little room. Very shifty lateral moves, and makes them at top speed. Sharp cuts and stop/starts gain separation. While at his best as a dangerous pure sniper, Stamkos also sees the ice very well and can make creative passes. While not the biggest player, he has worked on his core strength and handles the heavy going just fine. Has no fear of getting involved and while the physical game isn't exactly his bread-and-butter he will use the body to his advantage when the time calls for it. A true potential superstar.
Projection: Elite, top-line centre people will pay to see.
Style compares to: Steve Yzerman"

Anyone else surprised when they announce Stamko that the announcers talked about the owners and then said.......and with Melrose he will have a coach that can work with younger players?
The deal was Jokinen for Ballard, Boynton, and a 2nd round pick.

Florida is going to be (even more) terrible next season.
Thrashers select D Zach Bogosian.
Bogosian compared to Chelios.
Montreal trades pick #25 and a 2nd in 2009 for Tanguay and Calgary's 5th in 2008. Trade consumated.
Blues select D Alex Pietrangelo.
Compared to Matthias Ohlund.

Wonder if Kubina will be packaged and shipped to the Island?
Toronto moves from #7 up to #5. Isles pick up a 2nd and 3rd, with options this year and next year that are very complicated.
Toronto picks D Luke Schenn. Compares to Adam Foote.
LW Nikita Filatov and RW Mikkel Boedker still on the board. Boedker, IMO, is a stud.

#19, Flyers select D Luca Sbisa. Compares to Dan Hamhuis.
More like Mike Smith, IMO.
I still like the Carey Price comparison for him, without the high-end upside.
THN Best Available:
D Michael Del Zotto
RW Mattias Tedenby
D Colby Robak
Red Line Best Available:
RW Kirill Petrov
RW Mattias Tedenby

Swing for the fences. Lots of question marks regarding his ability to hang onto the puck. Great skater though -- like Rico Fata. Definitely a classic Lou pick.

McKeen's compares him to Andreychuk. Big. Dirty areas. Scoring touch. Questionable skater. Does say he is not as aggressive as Josh Brittain.

#13, Kings select D Colten Teubert. Compares to Mike Komisarek.
I like the first day for the Kings. They have addressed the need for defensemen. Getting Doughty and Teubert was a great move by Lombardi. In addition, they shed some salary who was made expendable by the play of O'Sullivan.
Also, great pick by the Bolts :D
#26, Sabres select C Tyler Ennis. Compares to Brian Gionta. Wow. Tiny tiny tiny.

So far there has been a bunch of movement up and down, a deep draft makes those kinds of moves possible and offers some teams an opportunity to stock up the farm. I hope we get involved in this tomorrow by trading Kuba, Smirky and Ward. Oh well it should be fun to watch.
Ducks trade #28 to Phoenix for two 2nd round picks.
#28, Coyotes select LW Viktor Tikhonov. Compares to Valteri Filppula. Passed over in two drafts. We could've had him last year in the 7th round.
#29, Thrashers select C Daultan Leveille. Compared to Todd Marchant. Fastest player in the draft. Soft. Not very skilled. Reach.
#30, Red Wings select G Thomas McCollum. Compares to... Johan Holmqvist. Ouch.

McKeen's echos...
Some aren't as convinced that McCollum is a first-round pick. He can go down too early and not come out to challenge shooters; he can have problems high on his glove side.

Pete, which teams today got better with their trades of current roster players?

NHL Network just had an interview with Feaster from tonight after the pick. Nothing earth-shattering, but again re-iterated that Oren and Len want to be very active in free agency. Said Oren wants to win all 82 games, which he knows isn't possible, but Feaster used it to illustrate his dedication.
Feaster also said that the marketing campaign isn't something meant to put pressure on Stamkos, but rather to raise awareness. Noted that in a non-traditional hockey market, you have to get a little bit creative, but that he wants the community to be really aware of Stamkos and what he's all about. He said the whole organization has had a lot of fun with that campaign.

FWIW, Pierre McGuire likes what Florida did.
IMO, and I'm not Pete, but how are the Panthers going to score? Horton likes to have the puck given to him, and JJ did that. Ballard has been passed around a bit in his career already and dropped from 37 points 2 years ago to just over 20 this year despite playing the same amount of games. Boynton also has moved from WSH (draft) to Boston to PHO to FLA. He too has dropped in points substantially in his career and was a minus player last year. He'll be a decent 2nd rounder.
They're defense is improved... but again, who's going to score? DeBoer didn't play the trap with Kitchener - he had 2 fantastic scoring lines he rotated heavily.

thanks Chad for the imput. I only memtioned Pete as he has been on here all night keeping us update. I would love to hear anyone's thought on the issue.
Will be really interesting as to what some do over the week end. Looks like it may be a do dog fight for some players services come July 1st.
If we can change our defense over to a hard hitting stand then up at the blue line with the forwards back checking I think Smith and Ramo will be just fine.

FWIW, Pierre McGuire likes what Florida did.LOL, and an extra LOL @ the panther fans who thought Martin wouldn't trade him unless it was for a huge return. What a lousy return for Florida.
Thanks for the recaps of the picks & trades. Glad I stuck around a tv long enough to watch Stamkos getting drafted, I come home & it turns out the power was out and the cable's still out so no tape for me. :(
Yeah, I think Florida is a joke. Every two years they're trading one of their franchise players. First Luongo. Now Jokinen. Give it a couple of years and Horton will be on the way out too. Phoenix already had some nice pieces in place and now they add a legitimate 30 goal scorer with grit to the mix. I like what they did. If they were in the East, they'd be a legit playoff contender.
I didn't like what the Kings did dealing Cammalleri. I think to give up a proven scorer like that for a mid first round pick was ludicrous. Just plain bad. Good move for Calgary.
And the Alex Tanguay deal for Montreal? We'll have to see if Tanguay re-elevates his game. Calgary couldn't afford him anymore, so kudos for them getting a replacement for half the price.

Except because of the arbitration case last summer, Cammaleri is UFA next summer, and he likely won't remain a 3.35M player.

I had heard Vancouver was going to get Olli Jokinen for Ryan Kesler and the 10th pick.
That sounded good to me.
Hodgson/Myers or Beach and Kesler for Jokinen. Not sure, Ballard is a pretty good d man.
