Goals in 5 straight, points in 6, Barrie's won 15 in a row.

He's really started to come on. I expected a little more out of him earlier in the year. He was putzing along at around a PPG pace, but he's a multipoint-a-game player.

Maybe not next year, but a few years down the line he'll have a good chance to make it.

Yeah, there were a lot of virtual high fives when the Lightning stole Hutchings in the 4th round, and who can forget Lawton's draft day tweet that our Head Scout was so excited he forgot where he was and started drinking Lawton's Diet Coke?

He could be a Brian Gionta type player in the NHL.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hutchings continued his 7 game goal scoring streak (+assists) with ANOTHER SHORT-HANDED GOAL!

Colts’ Hutchings Named Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week
December 7, 2009
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Alex Hutchings of the Barrie Colts is the Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 6. Hutchings recorded eight points in three games scoring four shorthanded goals and four assists with a league-best plus-minus rating of plus-6.

Hutchings and the Colts have now won 17 straight games including three wins this week beginning Thursday night at home with a 5-3 win over the Niagara IceDogs. Hutchings scored the game-winner shorthanded at 8:02 of the third period and added another shorthanded tally with a penalty shot goal for the insurance marker at 8:31 of the third period and was named the game’s first star. On Friday night he recorded his first career five-point game with a shorthanded goal and four assists in a 6-3 win over the Erie Otters where he was again named first star of the game. His week wrapped up on Saturday night with a shorthanded goal in a 6-1 win over the Niagara IceDogs.

Hutchings, a 19-year-old from Burlington, ON, is playing in his fourth OHL season with the Colts. Tied for 12th overall in league scoring, he has produced 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points in 30 games this season. Hutchings, who leads the league with five shorthanded goals, was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

When the top 2 lines (who are all very talented in their own right) are not producing and the broadcasters during the games are critiquing the reasons as to "why the goals against" i.e. out of position and lack of vision during the play, it would seem more like that "our coaches systems" are not matching the opponents systems sufficient to result in a win. As such, wouldn't the coaches need to make changes accordingly and relay that to the players?

Hey Chad

I never wanted to infringe on your postings/information/copyright etc.! I only wanted to add information for the regulars that interact with one another on a friendly, communicative basis, that do not have the opportunity to watch our prospects play in person or on TV.

I was imparting information that I knew of first hand and wanted to share with others.

However, I had been unaware that this site was a "read only" site of your postings i.e. your advisement that I should only wait for your twitter information etc!

Giving a link (or at least saying where it's from) when you're quoting someone's work word-for-word is common courtesy, not to mention the legal way to do things. No one's saying don't quote us, but give credit when you do.

That's, actually, HF Board's policy that she is violating. They may not care to enforce it for content from our website given the history between our staff and theirs, but that's their rules, too.

I was unaware of the legalities related to the postings, and I had copied and pasted an entry once, simply to share the information on a broader scale i.e. the Quebec league information as I do not follow their games.

A private cordial message to me would have been appreciated rather than the messages that were posted on your site.

Now that you are linked with Tampa's site, it wouldn't appear that I would need to provide any insight into the player's progress in the OHL or WHL.

Good luck in the future!

We used to work there. Let's just say their management and our staff didn't agree on the best way to cover the team's prospects. Let's also say their management has certain biases we feel compromise their integrity as a news outlet. Let's also say I had no problem telling them about it.

Last we heard directly from anyone at HF, one of their writers who was very close to the Online Editor proclaimed that their management was laughing at us for starting this website and that the NHL's trash cans were lined with players like Blair Jones. That was about 3-4 years ago. Care to guess who's laughing now?

timothy
12-24-2009, 12:12 AM
Also if someone could enlighten me, why exactly is there this bad blood between BP and HF?

Me, Pete, and Chad all use to be Lightning beat writers for HF. I'll leave it to Chad and Pete to speak of how their tenure(s) with HF ended if they want to, but I ended up kinda being the the last man standing. After declining the Predators beat writer job, HF just pretended I didn't exist anymore. That was about the time I pitched the idea to Pete and Chad about starting our own site.

pete
12-24-2009, 12:38 AM
I could write about 20-30 pages about what they did and why they were wrong to do it to us and what they're still doing wrong. But, you know, what's the point? Success is the best revenge, and leaving HF was the best thing we ever did because it gave us our freedom and it allowed us to maintain our credibility.

After Tim approached Chad and I, I started working on a blueprint of principles for how we'd make our website fresher and more pertinent than the stale, formulaic way HF writes their content. I wanted to use the blog to push our stories out in real time so we could actually track the progress of prospects as it happened rather than posting stories weeks after the fact and I wanted to develop a community around the website to help augment the content. The stupidest thing HF ever did was kill the comment feature on their stories. They had the site set up as a pseudo blog years before the word "blog" came into vogue, but they were so scared of people putting in their 2 cents they killed the feature. HF has tried to freshen up their content with podcasts and youTube content, but it's still stale, formulaic, and after-the-fact. They're using a 21st Century medium (the internet) to push out content that is more in line with 20th Century media (their stuff is written like a monthly magazine and their video content is like a weekly TV show, they're so far behind the times its painful). It's all one-way content delivered at a snail's speed.

The real time part of our plan worked well. Blogs lend themselves to real-time reporting and it was just a matter of committing ourselves, as a staff, to trying to get content out as quickly as possible. The community part didn't really happen until we installed the message boards, because this community just prefers this format over the blog diary format. Since that time we've gotten Twitter to help the site more agile and more real time, and Tim's done a good job of putting up feeds from TBL, the Trib, and the Times to augment the content even more. So I think without really talking about it, Tim and Chad have selected the right technological add-ons to support the vision we've always had for the site.

It hasn't followed the plan to a tee, but the general outline of what we were trying to accomplish and the outcome have been about what I expected, and this, I believe, is our 5th season into the whole experiment.

The information provided about the "staff/writing team" was very informative.
Being new to hockey postings this year, I was unaware that positions held were not on a volunteer fan-type basis. Also, this is not the case on all sites, so it is confusing.

I think that some sort of background/history within the site would be of interest to all new posters registering for the first time.

I remember reading that Tampa's "community site" was being closed down and thought it was this site. Then when I saw that fans were still posting, I started to provide information. What constitutes, stats, articles, comments and opinions are now clear.

Congratulations with your site's opportunity to work with Tampa's web-site. Detailed prospect information creates a greater interest in the future of the team and solidifys the team's fan base. The inner workings of the web-site's affiliates and estrangements are a new world to me and probably to many posters that used other means of communication for the better parts of their lives. I now realize that each forum is set up more as a business operation.

Many of the junior hockey teams have shut down their "community sites" and the NOOF forum was not allowing new registrations. So the HF site was of interest to many fans looking to talk about players, management and teams.

Although BP at the draft would be nice.

BoltProspects writers have enjoyed media passes and locker room access at both Lightning and minor leagues games off and on over the last few years -- especially from the Feaster regime, who first "open the door" to BP. It has taken awhile to get "acquainted" to the new ownership group, but things are certainly looking up.

However, NHL draft media passes have been problematic in the past. The Feaster regime would have gladly allowed access to BP, but the NHL Front Office issues all media passes for the NHL draft and that's the next hurdle for BoltProspects. I attempted to get a media pass for BP when the draft was in Nashville (the year Smaby was drafted), but BP was pretty young then and it didn't happen. I was at the draft, but did not have floor media access.

The '93 draft was actually pre-BP. Those were the HF days, and HF had a black eye from Shane Malloy taking the money and running when the print version of HF went belly up. HF actually lied about being credentialed at the '94 draft and the people from HF who were in the media pit were there on passes they got from other media outlets. We don't have that baggage, and it seems to me that now in 2009 internet media is a lot more accepted. I actually think we'd have a decent shot at it now.
