Here’s a bold statement: the Tampa Bay Lightning are fully capable of becoming Stanley Cup champions within the next five seasons. With two legitimate franchise centers in longtime stalwart Vincent Lecavalier (http://www.boltprospects.com/vincent-lecavalier) and star wunderkind Steven Stamkos (http://www.boltprospects.com/steven-stamkos) and a bevy of young goaltenders headlined by the ultra-competitive Mike Smith (http://www.boltprospects.com/mike-smith), the Lightning actually have many of the key components necessary to become an elite NHL team. That may seem like an insane statement coming off of a year that the Lightning finished second-to-last in the league, but between their core pieces and a bevy of other young complimentary players like Paul Ranger (http://www.boltprospects.com/paul-ranger), Andrej Meszaros (http://www.boltprospects.com/andrej-meszaros), and Matt Lashoff (http://www.boltprospects.com/matt-lashoff), the future in Tampa Bay is brighter than anyone is giving the team credit for. However, for the Lightning to reach their full potential, they must keep Lecavalier and they must capitalize on their draft position in the deep 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Make no mistake about it: this is the most important draft for the Lightning in 11 years. The 1998 draft was critical for the 2004 Stanley Cup team in supplying two core players (Lecavalier and Richards) and four players (including Dimitry Afanasenkov and Martin Cibak) overall to that championship roster. That draft seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime talent grab for the team, but with three picks in the top-60 in a talent rich year for youth, the new Lightning scouting staff might be set up to bring in an equally impressive fistfull of NHL talent. If they do, the Lightning may be just a few years away from reclimbing the ladder into the ranks of the NHL elite.

Great stuff.
Only thing i disagree with is the need to draft a pugilist. Not really interested in Rajala from what i've read either, but of course i have never seen him play

What is the story behind former WHALERS forward Ray Ferraro and his hate for the Lightning?

Probably has more to do with him being a former Trashers forward. He can't help but inject negativity whenever he's forced to talk about them on TV.

Nice response from the Facebook crowd, too.

I believe Ray has personal beef with Lecavalier too... Which is hilarious because I recall that Vinny was Landon's favorite player at one point about 4-5 years ago.

This team is in desperate need for a couple good young fighters. Whether they get them through the draft/trade/FA doesn't matter to me. However, I definately agree they need to add some good young tough guys, and hopefully Pete is right and they at least somewhat address this need through the draft.

They are committed to carrying an enforcer. The second you commit to do that, you need to draft 1-2 tough guys a year in the mid to late rounds.A guy like Koci isn't a long term solution. They need to draft and develop someone who can play 10-12 minutes of good forechecking hockey and be able to square off against other teams' heavies. This was a foregone conclusion the second you had WHL guys re-upping Tocc.

I do hope you're right. If Tocchet has the final say on the team roster he wants to dress every night then I believe that will be the case.
