Report: Lightning to Sign WHL's Leading Goal Scorer
SWX in eastern Washington is reporting Tyler Johnson, the Spokane Chiefs' leading scorer and WHL's leading goal scorer, will sign a three-year entry level contract with the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning when the Chiefs return from their two-game weekend series in Prince George.
Johnson, who is listed at 5'9", is an undrafted center and a former Chiefs teammate of current Norfolk Admirals goaltender Dustin Tokarski. Johnson, Tokarski and the Chiefs won the Memorial Cup in 2008. Johnson was the MVP of the WHL playoffs that year while Tokarski was Memorial Cup MVP.
Johnson, who is a native of Spokane, represented the USA twice at World Juniors. He had five points in seven games in the 2010 tournament.
He camped with the Coyotes and Wild the last two summers.
Johnson's 105 points are good for second in the league, four points behind Linden Vey of Medicine Hat. He has 47 goals on the season.
