N.A. Juniors Game Night: 3/15

Luca! Luca! Luca! He's done it again! ... Barberio gets a goal against Ward's Screaming Eagles in regular season finale ... Another multi-point night for Fadden ... Jung stellar, but Edmonton's nearly choked this opportunity away.

Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 1 @ Moncton Wildcats 3
D Michael Ward, CB: 0-0-0, E, 6 PIM, 2 SOG
Season totals: 65 GP, 7-27-34, +9, 105 PIM
With Cape Breton: 30 GP, 3-14-17, +8, 53 PIM
D Mark Barberio, MCT: 1-0-1, E, 0 PIM, 6 SOG
Season totals: 66 GP, 15-30-45, +9, 42 PIM

Barberio finished the year with points in four straight games for the Atlantic champs. Moncton set a new league record for the least amount of goals allowed in a year (149). The mark was 15 better than Cape Breton’s 2003-04 total behind Martin Houle (Flyers) and Marc-Andre Fleury (Penguins). Moncton’s goalie, undrafted overager Nicola Riopel, set a new Q record for best GAA in a season with 2.01. Fleury had a 1.98 GAA in 03-04, but didn’t play enough games to qualify.

Moncton will play PEI in the first round, with Cape Breton hosting Saint John.

Despite a mid-season slump, Barberio finished just one point shy of his 07-08 point total of 46, and set a new career high for goals (15). He played four fewer games this season than last. He finished 9th in the league in scoring among defensemen.

Ward obliterated is previous career highs, notching bests in goals (7 vs. 4), assists (27 vs. 16), points (34 vs. 20), and PIM (105 vs. 91).

Rimouski Oceanic 5 @ Shawinigan Cataractes 4 (OT)
W/C Luca Cunti, RIM: 3-0-3, +2, 0 PIM, 3 SOG, *First Star*
Season totals: 57 GP, 20-25-45, +10, 32 PIM

This is not a re-print – Luca just earned his second hat trick in as many games, but this one included an overtime winner. He got the hatter on just three shots, too. Luca has peaked at just the right time for Rimouski, who will host Chicoutimi in the first round of the playoffs. Luca hits the 20 goal mark, when last week it seemed like it was way out of reach. I hate to say “Where has this been all year?” so I won’t and will just enjoy this. Way to go, Luca.

Prince George Cougars 1 @ Tri-City Americans 3
C Mitch Fadden, TC: 1-1-2, +2, 0 PIM, *Third Star*
Season totals: 62 GP, 37-39-76, +25, 49 PIM
With TC: 53 GP, 35-36-71, +23, 41 PIM

No.2 TC will play Everett in the first round. They still have to play Spokane on Tuesday in a game that was postponed due to 11 Chiefs having food poisoning.

Notes: Dustin Tokarski and Spokane will play Kelowna tonight and TC Tuesday. If Spokane wins both, the defending WHL and Memorial Cup champs get the No.3 seed. If they lose one, they get the 4th and Kelowna gets the 3rd.
