Lightning Trade Halpern for Purcell, 3rd

The Lightning have traded veteran forward Jeff Halpern to the Los Angeles Kings for young winger Ted Purcell and Florida's third round pick.

An accomplished scorer in the minors, Purcell has been somewhat of an inconsistent prospect in the NHL thus far, with three goals and three assists in 41 games so far this year on a stacked Kings squad. He had 16 points (4 goals) in 40 games with the Kings a season ago.

Purcell was undrafted, though was over a point per game at the University of Maine his only year in college and was well over a point a game player at Cedar Rapids of the USHL. He was signed as a coveted unrestricted free agent out of Maine by Los Angeles in 2007.

With the Lightning struggling to fill two scoring lines most of the year, Purcell is likely to get a prime opportunity to play next to either Vincent Lecavalier or Steven Stamkos. At worse, he has enough two-way ability to fill in on the bottom two lines.

This trade also gives the Lightning three third rounders for the 2010 draft (Florida, Tampa Bay, Anaheim via Evgeny Artyukhin trade).
