(Norfolk Admirals press release) The Norfolk Admirals have released goaltender Jaroslav Janus from his Professional Tryout Contract (PTO). Janus will report to the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League.
Janus, a 5-foot-11, 192-pound goaltender from Presov, Slovakia, appeared in his first two professional games with the Admirals, recording an impressive 1.52 goals-against average and .939 save percentage with an 0-2-0 record. He made his pro debut on October 14 at Albany, stopping 27 of 29 shots in a 3-1 setback. The Admirals NHL parent club, the Tampa Bay Lightning, drafted Janus in the sixth round (162nd overall) of last summer’s NHL Entry Draft.
Janus completed his second OHL season with Erie in 2008-09, posting a 25-20-3 record with a 3.24 goals-against average in 49 games. He led the Otters in games played, wins, shutouts with three and save percentage at .908. He also played in five playoff games with Erie, posting a shutout and a 1-4-0 record.
Janus has played in 97 career OHL games, posting a 38-49-5 record with a 3.81 goals-against average.
Note: Janus is expected to join the Otters Thursday and play Friday vs. Niagara.
The newspaper received confirmation of the expected transaction from Janus' agent, Craig Oster of Newport Sports Management Inc. in Mississauga, Ontario.
The report also states the Lightning are interested in signing Janus after this season.
Janus, a 2009 sixth round pick of the Lightning, began the season with Norfolk on a 25-game professional tryout contract. He has played in two of Norfolk's 10 games, accumulating a 0-2-0 record, a 1.52 goals-against average (GAA) and a .939 save percentage. Last year he posted a 25-20-4 record with Erie, along with a 3.24 GAA and a .908 save percentage. The Otters have struggled defensively this year so far, and Janus will be a welcomed re-addition.
Harvard's Alex Killorn was named the ECAC Player of the Week on Monday, November 2, after scoring two goals and an assist in the Crimson’s 5-3 win vs. Dartmouth last Friday.
According to the Harvard Gazette, Killorn was named ECAC Rookie of the Week November 24, 2008, and was named an honorable mention for the Hockey Commissioners’ Association National Rookie of the Month in February. He finished his freshman year with six goals, nine assists, and 15 points in 30 games.
He was a standout this past summer for the Lightning in the club's post-draft prospect camp.
Killorn was taken by the Lightning in the third round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
This is the second time in two seasons DeCoste has been traded. Last year the center/winger split the season between Brampton and the Soo, scoring 15 times while contributing 13 assists and 76 penalty minutes.
He has recorded two goals and three points along with 20 penalty minutes in 13 games played so far with the Greyhounds in this, his fourth OHL season.
DeCoste, who has a goal and an assist in his last two games, was taken by the Lightning in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
