Lightning Sign Masin to Entry-Level Contract

(Tampa Bay Lightning release)

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman Dominik Masin to a three-year, entry-level contract today, vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman announced.

Masin, 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, has played in seven games with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League this season, recording one assist. He leads all Peterborough skaters for plus/minus with a plus-9 rating and ranks third for penalty minutes with 12. In two seasons with the Petes, Masin has registered seven goals and 27 points in 55 games.

A native of Mestec Kralove, Czech Republic, Masin represented his native country in the 2015 World Junior Championships, notching an assist in five games.

Masin, 19, was drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round, 35th overall, of the 2014 NHL Draft.

BP Commentary:

The Lightning have high hopes for Masin, whom they drafted with one of the Martin St. Louis draft picks. Syracuse Coach Rob Zettler said in Estero at the prospects tournament that Masin will be a great player for a "long, long time," which usually is a comment reserved for prospects the organization feels are near or at the elite category. Toward the second half of last season, his first in North America, his offense started to come around. He was mostly a character, defense-first defenseman (aren't they all?) when he was drafted out of the Czech Republic. He has top-4 defenseman upside when everything eventually comes together. Spending a year or two in the AHL with former defensemen Zettler and assistant coach Trent Cull will certainly help. Stay patient.

Bolt Prospect of the Week

We continue our Bolt Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for his recent contributions on and off the ice.

The Bolt Prospect of the Week for the week ending October 12 is … Dennis Yan, W, Shawinigan Cataractes, QMJHL.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are taking over the Canadian Hockey League.

Two Lightning prospects, Dennis Yan (QMJHL) and Brayden Point (WHL), won their respective league’s Player of the Week this week after they combined for three hat tricks.
