Lightning camper Joel Martin withstood a barrage of 28 Beast shots in the first two periods and the K-wings power play chalked up two markers as Kalamazoo handed Brampton and former Lightning defenseman Mike Vernace their first regulation loss of the season. Martin snagged yet another first star honor and maintains Top-10 in the league in SV%, and forward Anthony Camara scored two goals after being signed by Kalamazoo earlier in the day. Camara, a former 2011 3rd round pick by the Bruins, spent the last three seasons in the AHL with Providence and Charlotte. Brampton backliner Mike Vernace played 10 games with Tampa and parts of two seasons with the Norfolk Admirals before being traded with James Wright to the Panthers organization for now legendary Lightning blueliners Mike Kostka and Evan Oberg. That trade for Kostka and Oberg was key to that historic 2011-12 Admirals win streak and Calder Cup championship.

The K-Wings get a travel day Saturday before an afternoon tilt Sunday against the Nailers in Wheeling. Last weekend goalie Nic Riopel gave up 8 goals against the Nailers, so it will be interesting to see he gets a shot at redemption despite no back-to-back.

It was the tale of two Tylers in Kalamazoo Sunday afternoon, as the K-Wings went 3-for-4 on the power play and powered by the Americans in front of 2400+ fans at the Wings Event Center. Former Maple Leafs 1st rounder Tyler Biggs scored twice and added a third power play point and former Blues 4th rounder Tyler Shattock added two more goals. Lightning camper Joel Martin maintained his sub-2 GAA after allowing the most goals (3) in a game for the season. He's currently ranked 9th in the league in both GAA and SV%.

Kalamazoo hits the road next weekend, taking on the Beast in Brampton Friday night, and look to go into Wheeling Sunday afternoon and avenge Saturday night's snowman debacle. With no back-to-back next weekend, it will be interesting to watch and see if Nic Riopel gets a start.

With Adam Comrie recalled to Syracuse, the K-Wings played a home-and-home with the Wheeling Nailers Friday and Saturday night. On Friday night at home in front 1200+ fans at the Wing Event Center, Kalamazoo battled to a 3-2 shootout loss behind two powerplay goals by Eric Kattelus.

On Saturday night, Nic Riopel was hammered as the Nailers put a snowman up on the board in front of 2100+ of their fans at the WesBanco Areana. If Lightning prospect Brian Hart is looking to get into the Syracuse lineup, he's going to have to do better than the 1 shot-on-goal in 4 games thus far. Kalamazoo plays at home against Allen Sunday night to complete the weekend 3-in-3.

Riopel earned First Star honors once again, and now leads the ECHL in both save percentage and goals against average. The K-Wings were propelled by a 3-goal 2nd period and defenseman Adam Comrie had an assist and was +3 in helping hand the Komets their first loss of the season. Former Toronto first rounder Tyler Biggs was signed mid-week by the K-Wings and made his debut scoring a goal and assisting on another. Kalamazoo plays a home-and-home next Friday and Saturday against Wheeling before completing the 3-in-3 on Sunday at home against Allen.

Former Lightning prospects Pat Nagle and Dan Milan along with their Fort Wayne Komets spoiled Kalamazoo's home opener Friday night in front of 2300+ fans at the Wings Event Center. It was also the season debut for Lightning prospect winger Brian Hart and Syracuse Crunch depth defenseman Adam Comrie after both were reassigned from the Crunch earlier in the week. Nagle continued his hot start to the 2016-17 season with the Komets, allowing just 4 goals in 3 games. K-Wings goalie and Lightning camper Joel Martin also continued his solid start to the season, having allowed just 3 goals in 2 games. Nic Riopel is expected to be in net Saturday for the K-Wings on the backside of the home-and-home with the Komets.

Nagle signed an entry-level contract with Tampa Bay out of Ferris State in 2011, and helped lead the Florida Everblades to the 2011-12 Kelly Cup Championship. This marks Nagle's third-straight season with the Komets and has posted a 54-19-10 career record with Fort Wayne. Milan, who signed a three-year entry-level contract with Tampa Bay in 2011, is reunited with Nagle after playing together for the 2012-13 Everblades. Milan camped with the AHL Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins after being acquired by the Komets this summer from the Wichita Thunder.

It was a tall order to follow behind Joel Martin's 32-save season-opener win Friday night, but Nic Riopel pitched a 20-save shutout against his former team Saturday night as the K-Wings go up 2-0 on the road to start the 2016-17 ECHL season. Riopel, on a two-way AHL/ECHL deal with the Syracuse Crunch, was both a Lightning and a Crunch camper and essentially serves as the organization's #5 goalie. Riopel earned First Star honors for his performance. Fellow Lightning campers Lane Scheidl and Ben Wilson scored for Kalamazoo. The K-Wings play a home-and-home against the Fort Wayne Komets next Friday and Saturday night.
