Chicago broke open a close game with two second period goals, then exploded for two more within 24 seconds of each other early in the third period. After trading goals Florida cut the lead to 5-2 with a minute and a half to go in the game, but couldn’t get any closer despite pulling their goalie. Florida is holding on for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Chicago, who has a game in hand on the 'Blades.

Florida earned two big points on their first ever trip to Chicago’s Sears Center. Shane Owen started the game in net for the Everblades, but was replaced after the second period by Pat Nagle, who stopped 10 of 11 shots the rest of the way. The one that beat him was scored with under a minute left in the game and forced overtime for Chicago. Nagle allowed just one of seven shooters to beat him in the skills competition. Alex Hutchings (pictured) was the only Lightning prospect to participate in the shootout, and he scored on his opportunity. Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll scored the shootout winning goal and he also had two goals during regulation. McNicoll is a former 104-point scorer for Shawinigan of the QMJHL.

G Pat Nagle, FLA: Loss, 30 saves on 32 shots
Season Totals: 35 GP, 17-13-0-3, 2.83 GAA, .905 sv%, 1 SO

This was a big loss for the Everblades considering the Cyclones came into the game two points behind Florida for seventh in the East. Both teams are barely hanging on to a playoff spot. Sebastien Piche, who was acquired by the Lightning from the Red Wings organization earlier this week, made his debut for Florida. Piche, who had 33 points for ECHL Toledo last year in 48 games, was playing his first ECHL game this season. He played in 22 contests for AHL Grand Rapids, registering three assists. He provides Florida with offense from the backline and gives AHL Norfolk some defensive depth for their impending playoff run.

Alex Hutchings had his six game point streak snapped and Pat Nagle had his three game win streak broken. Florida plays in Chicago Saturday night.

Prospect of the Week (2.22.12)

This season Bolt Prospects introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their on-ice contributions. There are no trophies or plaques, but Evan Oberg has donated some airline miles for the winner.
And a luggage set. And a shortcut around the trams at Tampa International.

We wanted to highlight prospects throughout the year to help fans get better acquainted with the next round of Lightning stars while recognizing the prospect’s achievement on the ice.

This week’s BP Prospect of the Week award goes to … Pat Nagle, Goaltender, Florida (ECHL).

Lightning Press Releases on Downie, Segal

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired a first-round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft as well as defenseman Sebastien Piche in a three-team trade Wednesday, Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced. The Lightning traded forward Steve Downie to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Kyle Quincey. Tampa Bay then sent Quincey to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for their first-round pick and Piche.

The Lightning now have two first-round picks in 2012 along with a maximum of four and a minimum of three selections in the second round.

Piche (pictured), 6-foot, 202 pounds, has played in 42 career AHL games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, recording five points (0-5-5). This season he has played in 22 games, notching three assists. Piche signed with the Red Wings as a free agent on April 12, 2009.

Piche has been assigned to the Florida Everblades of the ECHL.

The Lightning also acquired forward Brendon Segal from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forward Matt Fornataro on Wednesday. Fornataro was on an AHL contract with Norfolk.
