BCHL

BCHL Interior Conference Semifinals – Game 3

Penticton Vees 1 @ Salmon Arm Silverbacks 2 (OT)
Silverbacks lead Best of 7 series 3-0

C Brendan O’Donnell, PEN: 0-0-0, 4 PIM (roughing, high sticking), *Third Star*
Season totals: 58 GP, 29-43-72, 28 PIM
Playoff totals: 4 GP, 1-3-4, 9 PIM

This is getting ridiculous. Penticton outshot Salmon Arm badly for the third straight game, this time 52-19, but was still set back by undrafted goaltender Kris Moore. The Vees put up 20 shots in both the second and third periods. Moore has been First Star in all three games of the series. Not only was the 20-year-old goaltender undrafted, he is not listed as a commitment to any NCAA school. Game 4 is Saturday on the Silverbacks’ home rink. Though O’Donnell didn’t score, he was named Third Star on the road.

USHL

Lincoln Stars 3 @ Fargo Force 0
C Jimmy Mullin, FGO: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM, 4 SOG
Season totals: 43 GP, 19-29-48, +23, 24 PIM

Fargo outshot Lincoln 32-24, but couldn’t put one past 20-year-old goaltender Ryan Massa (undrafted). Lincoln is just five points behind Fargo for fourth in the West, with the Stars holding two games in hand.

QMJHL

Gatineau Olympiques 6 @ Lewiston MAINEiacs 3
D Adam Janosik, GAT: 0-1-1, +1, 5 PIM (fighting vs. Cole Hawes), 0 SOG, 0 Hits

Janosik had three fights last season, but this was his first this year.

D Charles Landry, MTL: 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM, 2 SOG, 1 Hit
Season Totals: 54 GP, 11-27-38, +22, 28 PIM

The Volts scored twice within four minutes of the end of regulation and again in overtime to steal a win in Montreal. Landry was not on the ice for the overtime winner, but was on the ice for both of Drummondville’s third period goals (one on the power play).

Zador was back on the Attack bench Thursday night, but did not dress out Friday for the Attack. He missed several games with a concussion prior to Thursday. Schemitsch is reportedly skating again and should be back by the playoffs.

WHL

Tri-City Americans 1 @ Spokane Chiefs 5
RW Carter Ashton, TC: 0-0-0, E, 5 PIM (fighting vs. Tanner Mort)
With Tri-City: 28 GP, 13-25-38, +8, 52 PIM
With Regina: 29 GP, 16-11-27, -12, 44 PIM
Season Totals: 57 GP, 29-36-65, -4, 96 PIM
C Tyler Johnson, SPO: 2-1-3, +1, 0 PIM, *First Star*
Season Totals: 66 GP, 50-59-109, +28, 44 PIM

Not long ago TC was battling Spokane for second in the division. Five straight wins over TC later and the Chiefs are 10 points ahead of the Americans. This was Johnson’s “debut” as a Lightning prospect after signing an NHL Entry Level Contract on Monday. He promptly went out and hit 50 goals for the season, which leads the WHL and is 14 more than his previous career high. Johnson (pictured) is within five points of Medicine Hat’s Linden Vey for the league scoring title. This was Ashton’s sixth fight of the year and third against Spokane. It was the first time he fought Mort. Ashton had his five-game point streak come to an end.

Prince George Cougars 8 @ Vancouver Giants 0
RW Brett Connolly, PG: 1-1-2, +1, 0 PIM, *Third Star*
Season totals: 55 GP, 42-24-64, -6, 26 PIM

One game after losing 7-0 at home to Red Deer, the Cougars stepped up and crushed the Giants in Vancouver. Connolly continues to raise his career highs for goals and points. He is six assists away from tying his career high in that category.

Saskatoon Blades 3 @ Brandon Wheat Kings 4 (OT)
D Teigan Zahn, SAS: 0-0-0, +1, 0 PIM
Season totals: 68 GP, 3-19-22, +34, 133 PIM

Zahn’s high three-game point streak came to an end in an overtime loss to Brandon. It was the second longest streak of his career after a four-game streak he had earlier this season. The Blades have already clinched the league’s top record.

North American Juniors Game Night: 3/9/11

BCHL

BCHL Interior Conference Semifinals – Game 2

Salmon Arm Silverbacks 3 @ Penticton Vees 2
Silverbacks lead Best of 7 series 2-0

C Brendan O’Donnell, PEN: 1-1-2, 0 PIM
Season totals: 58 GP, 29-43-72, 28 PIM
Playoff totals: 3 GP, 1-3-4, 5 PIM

O’Donnell had a goal and an assist, but the story of the game and the series thus far was undrafted goaltender Kris Moore of Salmon Arm. For the second straight game the Vees outshot the Silverbacks by nearly a 2-to-1 margin, but Moore, who lists former Lightning goaltender Corey Schwab as his greatest hockey influence in his player profile, made 40 saves and stole Game 2 for the underdogs. The series now heads the Silverbacks’ barn with the Vees in a big hole.

USHL

Sioux Falls Stampede 7 @ Fargo Force 2
C Jimmy Mullin, FGO: 1-0-1, -2, 0 PIM, 8 SOG
Season totals: 42 GP, 19-29-48, +23, 24 PIM

Mullin broke a two game scoreless streak, but the Force was hammered at home in an important game, 7-2 by Sioux Falls. The teams entered the game tied for third in the Western Conference at 60 points with Sioux Falls holding a game in hand. Fargo now sits alone in fourth, one point behind Omaha.

WHL

Tri-City Americans 1 @ Kelowna Rockets 3
RW Carter Ashton, TC: 1-0-1, E, 4 PIM (high sticking, hooking)
With Tri-City: 27 GP, 13-25-38, +8, 47 PIM
With Regina: 29 GP, 16-11-27, -12, 44 PIM
Season Totals: 56 GP, 29-36-65, -4, 91 PIM

Ashton’s streak of four games with at least two points came to an end, but he did manage his 29th goal of the season to put him within one of his career high of 30 – again. He thought he had his 29th goal two games ago, but a late scoring change took it away. Ashton’s goal Wednesday tied the game at one in Kelowna, but that’s all TC could manage. Rockets captain Tyson Barrie, son of former Lightning owner Len Barrie and once thought to be a certain draft target of the Barrie/Koules Bolts, had an assist in the game for Kelowna. The Avalanche draft pick has 54 points (10 goals) in 49 games this year.

Saskatoon Blades 5 @ Brandon Wheat Kings 3
D Teigan Zahn, SAS: 0-1-1, +3, 2 PIM (holding)
Season totals: 67 GP, 3-19-22, +33, 133 PIM

Zahn has quietly established a career high for points in a season at 22. His plus-33 rating is “just” 28 better than his previous career high in that category. The overager and captain of the WHL’s top team is hoping for a contract at the end of the season from the Lightning. He has five points in his last three games and is plus-11 in those three games.

North American Juniors Game Night: 3/4/11

USHL

Fargo Force 1 @ Youngstown Phantoms 2
C Jimmy Mullin, FGO: 0-0-0, E, 2 PIM (interference), 6 SOG
Season totals: 40 GP, 18-29-47, +25, 24 PIM

Mullin was on a hot streak with five points in his last two games before getting held off the scoresheet vs. Youngstown. He led the team with six shots on goal Friday.

QMJHL

Gatineau Olympiques 5 @ Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 4 (OT)
D Adam Janosik, GAT: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM, 2 SOG, 0 Hits
Season Totals: 55 GP, 7-21-28, +12, 30 PIM

Philip-Michael Devos’ 44th goal of the year was the overtime winner for Gatineau. The undrafted Quebec native leads the Q in scoring with 104 points.

OHL

Erie Otters 5 @ Guelph Storm 4 (SO)
C/W Richard Panik, GUE: Did not play (injured – sprained ankle)
With Guelph: 22 GP, 12-12-24, -6, 34 PIM
With Belleville: 27 GP, 14-17-31, E, 33 PIM
Season totals: 49 GP, 26-29-55, -6, 67 PIM

Panik remains out with a sprained ankle. He is expected to return next week.

WHL

Everett Silvertips 2 @ Tri-City Americans 3 (OT)
RW Carter Ashton, TC: 1-1-2, +1, 2 PIM (unsportsmanlike conduct)
With Tri-City: 24 GP, 11-20-31, +4, 43 PIM
With Regina: 29 GP, 16-11-27, -12, 44 PIM
Season Totals: 53 GP, 27-31-58, -8, 87 PIM

Ashton’s 27th goal of the season gave the Ams an overtime win and gave the team a much-needed victory. Ashton has four points in his last two games.

Spokane Chiefs 5 @ Prince George Cougars 4
RW Brett Connolly, PG: 1-0-1, -1, 0 PIM, *Third Star*
Season totals: 52 GP, 40-23-63, -3, 26 PIM

Connolly scored his 40th goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Chiefs held on for a 5-4 win in Prince George. Connolly, who has three goals in his last two games, is tied for fifth in the league in goals despite playing 10-11 fewer games than those above him. Spokane’s Tyler Johnson (undrafted) leads with 47. Johnson had a goal Friday against the Cougars.

Kootenay Ice 2 @ Saskatoon Blades 9
D Teigan Zahn, SAS: 0-1-1, +2, 0 PIM
Season totals: 65 GP, 3-15-18, +24, 131 PIM

Zahn is within one point of his career high of 19 in a season, set in 2007-2008. Saskatoon has scored 30 goals in their past four games; 17 in their last two. Defenseman Stefan Elliott (Avalanche) scored his 29th and 30th goals of the season for the Blades.

North American Juniors Game Night: 3/2/11

QMJHL

Victoriaville Tigres 3 @ Gatineau Olympiques 4
D Adam Janosik, GAT: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM, 2 SOG, 1 Hit
Season Totals: 54 GP, 7-21-28, +12, 30 PIM

He’s getting close, but barring a ridiculously strong finish it doesn’t look like Janosik will match his career high of 35 points set last year in 63 games. He is within two goals of his career high of nine with six games remaining.

WHL

Saskatoon Blades 8 @ Edmonton Oil Kings 5
D Teigan Zahn, SAS: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
Season totals: 64 GP, 3-14-17, +22, 131 PIM

The Blades were down 3-1 in this game before exploding for a big win. Defenseman Stefan Elliott had two goals in the game and now has 28 for the year to go with 75 points. The 2009 Avalanche second rounder had 26 goals and 65 points last season.

North American Juniors Game Night: 2/26/11

USHL

Lincoln Stars 3 @ Fargo Force 6
C Jimmy Mullin, FGO: 2-1-3, +2, 0 PIM, 5 SOG
Season totals: 39 GP, 18-29-47, +25, 22 PIM

Mullin (pictured) now has five points in his last two games. His unassisted, shorthanded goal early in the third period was the first of four straight goals for the Force in the period. They’d add another after Lincoln scored to make it 5-3. Mullin is ninth in the league in scoring and third in plus/minus.

QMJHL

Gatineau Olympiques 2 @ Shawinigan Cataractes 1
D Adam Janosik, GAT: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM, 0 SOG, 0 Hits
Season Totals: 52 GP, 7-20-27, +11, 30 PIM

Gatineau was outshot by a 2:1 margin (34-17), yet squeezed out a victory in Shawinigan when Philip-Michael Devos (undrafted) scored his 41st goal of the season late. Devos (5-11, 184) leads the Q scoring race with 98 points in 60 games.

Season totals: 49 GP, 26-29-55, -6, 67 PIM

Season Totals: 29 GP, 17-5-1-1, 3.29 GAA, .885 sv%, 1 SO

This could have been a match-up featuring three Lightning prospects, but none even made it into uniform. No word so far on why Zador didn't dress.

WHL

Tri-City Americans 1 @ Spokane Chiefs 3
RW Carter Ashton, TC: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
With Tri-City: 21 GP, 9-18-27, +3, 37 PIM
With Regina: 29 GP, 16-11-27, -12, 44 PIM
Season Totals: 50 GP, 25-29-54, -9, 77 PIM

The Chiefs have TC’s number. Saturday night Spokane beat their division rivals for the fourth time in the last two weeks. As a result, the Ams have now fallen six points behind Spokane. For the season, Spokane has won six of the 10 games played between the two teams. They’ll meet two more times before the season ends.

Prince George Cougars 3 @ Everett Silvertips 1
RW Brett Connolly, PG: 1-1-2, +1, 0 PIM
Season totals: 50 GP, 37-23-60, -4, 26 PIM

Connolly broke a season-long four game scoreless streak with a goal and an assist Saturday, and tied his career high for points in a season in the process. The Prince George captain had 60 points as a rookie two seasons ago in 65 games. This was a strong bounce-back game for the Cougars after losing 8-0 Friday to Spokane and twice to the Tips last weekend at home. Prince George had been on a five game losing streak.

Saskatoon Blades 2 @ Moose Jaw Warriors 1 (SO)
D Teigan Zahn, SAS: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
Season totals: 63 GP, 3-14-17, +22, 131 PIM

Saskatoon got a goal from Curtis Hamilton (Oilers) to win the shootout in Moose Jaw.
