NHL Game Night: 12-3-19 Lightning at Predators

Lightning OT master class claims two crucial road points.

NSH-2 (OT)

Andrei Vasilevskiy allowed 2 goals on 32 shots for the OT victory.

First Period
7:46 TB Hedman (5), (Stamkos, Johnson)

Second Period
6:13 NSH Jarnkrok (10), (Turris)
6:44 TB Palat (9), (Kucherov, Shattenkirk)

Third Period
9:51 NSH Turris (5), (Ekholm, Ellis)(PP)

2:35 TB Kucherov (10), (Stamkos, Sergachev)

Nikita Kucherov was the game's first star.

The Lightning tried to piddle this one down the leg pretty hard, wasting a full major penalty and several other golden opportunities to take this one in regulation on the power play. However, putting that aside, they got good goaltending tonight and they absolutely put on a master class in possession in Overtime by controlling the puck for pretty much the full duration of OT before tying a bow on it with a tap in finish by Kucherov.

I would be unsurprised to see Erik Cernak go right back on suspension for an uncalled elbow in the Third Period of tonight's contest.

It's really hard to understate how important those two points were. Lose that game and you've got to get nine of ten remaining possible points in this ten game segment of the year to stay on playoff pace. Even with the win, the Lightning still have to collect seven points out of the next five games. .700 hockey is far from a gimme, either, but it's more in the realm of reality than .900 hockey.

Carter Verhaeghe was -1 with 2 penalty minutes in 5:19.

Survive. Outlast. Advance.

Andrei Vasilevskiy allowed 2 goals on 30 shots for the victory. It was a very similar formula for the Lightning where he, again, weathered an early storm and got the goal support once the team got its legs underneath them.

First Period
0:13 TB Kucherov (8), (Palat)
3:40 BUF Reinhart (9), (Olofsson, Eichel)

Second Period
1:48 BUF Vesey (1), (unassisted)
7:20 TB Sergachev (2), (Palat, Shattenkirk)(PP)
9:26 TB Gourde (6), (McDonagh, Maroon)

Third Period
8:17 TB Paquette (3), (Cirelli, McDonagh)(SH)
9:06 TB Palat (8), (Joseph)(SH)

Ondrej Palat, Ryan McDonagh, and Cedric Paquette were the game's three stars.

It isn't pretty, start to finish, but the Lightning are developing a recipe for success without Stamkos in the lineup. It's fascinating to see the team execute a version of last year's playbook, but do it utilizing some lower line pieces like Cirelli, etc.

Carter Verhaeghe was -1 with 2 shots and 1 hit in 10:22.

Lightning drop a playoff-style test against a proven winner.

Andrei Vasilevskiy allowed 2 goals on 33 shots for the loss.

First Period
16:36 TB Cirelli (3), (Killorn, Hedman)(PP)

Second Period
17:24 STL Perron (9), (Parayko, O'Reilly)(SH)

Third Period
6:16 STL Sundqvist (4), (Thomas)(SH)
19:55 STL Schwartz (5), (Schenn)(SH)(EN)

Could beat a dead horse about giving up SH goals, but the Lightning only managed 18 SOG, so you don't deserve to win when you get shut down to that degree.

The Lightning have to win their next two games to stay on playoff pace through the second ten game segment of the season. Big test of whether they'll right the ship and stay on pace or dig a little hole.

Carter Verhaeghe was +1 with 1 hit in 6:22.

Lightning drop one against the run of play.

Andrei Vasilevskiy allowed 3 goals on 26 shots for the loss. I'm gonna be honest: as much as I love Andrei, when are we going to see him round into form? How many games this season has he been below .900 in save percentage? He's sitting on a .901 save percentage so far this season, and it's below his standards. It's not unreasonable for the Lightning to expect better than replacement level netminding from him.

First Period
1:59 WPG Perreault (5), (Morrissey, Poolman)
19:11 TB Hedman (4), (Stamkos)

Second Period
7:18 WPG Roslovic (4), (Copp, Wheeler)
7:39 WPG Ehlers (9), (Connor, Morrissey)(PP)

Third Period
17:44 TB Stamkos (7), (Hedman, Cirelli)
18:32 WPG Connor (7), (Wheeler, Sbisa)(EN)
19:38 TB Cirelli (2), (Killorn, Kucherov)

Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman were the game's second and third stars, with Stamkos notching his 400th career NHL goal in the loss.

The possession stats in the game were pretty good. That effort probably wins on more nights than not.

Carter Verhaeghe was -1 with 2 shots in 9:08.
