World Junior A Challenge
Sweden 1 vs. USA 5
C Jimmy Mullin, USA: 1-0-1, 0 PIM
Tournament totals: 2 GP, 4-0-4, 0 PIM
Mullin scored his tournament-leading fourth goal early in the first period, and the Americans scored three more in the second before Sweden found the scoresheet as USA easily disposed of the Swedes 5-1 in Penticton, B.C. USA is looking for its third-straight gold medal. They stand alone at the top of the standings with six points after two games and along with Switzerland will get a bye to the semifinals.
Canada West 4 vs. Russia 2
C Brendan O’Donnell, CW: 0-0-0, 0 PIM
Tournament totals: 2 GP, 0-1-1, 0 PIM
Canada West had a 2-0 lead midway through the game, but that quickly vanished by the end of the second period. Tied at 2 entering the third, Canada scored twice in the final frame to take the win. They will play Sweden on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
OHL
Oshawa Generals 4 @ Belleville Bulls 0
G Michael Zador, OSH: Did not play.
Season Totals: 7-3-1-1, 3.48 GAA, .880 sv%, 1 SO
C/W Richard Panik, BEL: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
Season totals: 19 GP, 11-11-22, +1, 25 PIM
Belleville only managed 16 shots against Zador’s (former?) backup Kevin Bailie, who was getting his second straight start. The Bulls have been searching for offense as a whole all season.
WHL
Portland Winterhawks 5 @ Regina Pats 4 (OT)
RW Carter Ashton, REG: 1-0-1, -2, 0 PIM
Season totals: 18 GP, 8-7-15, -8, 34 PIM
This was a good showing for the Pats against the league’s top team. Portland needed a late goal to force overtime. Blue Jackets first round pick Ryan Johansen had a goal for Portland, his eighth of the year, and Islanders first rounder Nino Niederreiter went without a point against Regina. After a slow start, Ashton has 12 points in his last 10 games, including goals in his last two.

Montreal scored twice in the late third to send the game to an extra session, then defeated the CHL’s top ranked team in a shootout. Patrick Roy and Quebec are 15-2-0-2 on the year. They're 0-1-0-1 this week - the same week Roy blamed Lightning coach Guy Boucher for the lack of offense in the QMJHL. #GuyBoucherKarma

Season Totals: 7-3-1-1, 3.48 GAA, .880 sv%, 1 SO
D Brock Beukeboom, SSM: 0-1-1, +3, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 15 GP, 0-1-1, -5, 36 PIM

Belleville Bulls 0 @ Kitchener Rangers 8
C/W Richard Panik, BEL: 0-0-0, -5, 0 PIM
Season totals: 17 GP, 11-10-21, E, 21 PIM
A snowman in Kitchener. Panik was a team-worst minus-5. The next worst was minus-3. Possible 2011 Lightning draft target right-handed defenseman Ryan Murphy just had an assist in the game. He has 10 goals and 28 points in 16 games so far this year for the Rangers and is now playing himself into the top of the first round it seems (and too high for the Lightning?).
Owen Sound Attack 0 @ Erie Otters 4
D Geoffrey Schemitsch, OS: 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM
Season totals: 17 GP, 1-10-11, +9, 2 PIM
Schemitsch had 4 points in his last 2 games coming into the Erie game.

RW Brett Connolly, PG: 0-0-0, -2, 0 PIM
Season totals: 16 GP, 14-8-22, E, 6 PIM
Connolly was scoreless for the second straight game. He failed to convert his shootout attempt. It’s a good sign for the Cougars team that they can win when Connolly is not producing statistically night in and night out like he has been.

Regina won their third in a row with an upset win over first-place Saskatoon. Ashton, who scored on the power play, now has 5 points in his last 2 games and 6 in his last 3. He was given credit for a goal in his last game after the play was reviewed late. Perhaps his season is indeed starting to take off.
