North American Juniors Game Night: 11/20/10

USHL

Fargo Force 8 @ Waterloo Black Hawks 3

Fargo is now in full force after the WJACs, putting up 8 goals on 25 shots in Waterloo Saturday night. Mullin’s goal, his sixth of the year, was scored shorthanded into an empty net in the 13th minute of the third period – a period in which Waterloo didn’t have a goalie for most of it. Fargo was up 5-1 in the 11th minute when Waterloo went on the power play. They pulled their goalie and scored, making it 5-2, then did it again for a 5 on 3 immediately after and scored again, making it 5-3. Mullin scored into the empty net in the 13th minute, then Fargo scored 2 more empty netters, in the 15th and 18th minute while Waterloo had extra attackers. The game also featured a line brawl where all 10 players were ejected with 5 minutes to go. Old time hockey! (except without 2 goalies)

Jimmy Mullin’s sixth goal of the tournament – scored unassisted – was the game-winner as the USA won gold at the World Junior A Challenge for the third consecutive year. Mullin scored the tie-breaking goal with just over 4 minutes left in the game. The U.S. would add an empty netter late. Mullin, who led all players in goals for the tournament, was named to the WJAC’s all-star team. USA defenceman Scott Mayfield was named MVP. Mullin will now return to Fargo of the USHL. Switzerland continued their rise in international play with a commanding blowout win over the home side, Canada West, to win bronze. O’Donnell did not hit the scoresheet in the game and finished the tournament with two assists. West scored the game’s opening goal and led 2-1 in the second period before entering the third tied at 2. Switzerland then scored the game’s next 6 goals, including 4 in about 4 ½ minutes. O’Donnell won’t have to travel to return to Penticton of the BCHL. Penticton served as host-city for the WJACs.

Brendan O’Donnell did not find the scoresheet for Canada West, who will play Switzerland for the bronze. This will be the first time in the AJAC’s 5-year history Canada West won’t play for gold. USA is seeking its third-straight gold medal.

Russia beat the Q twice before moving to the OHL portion of their schedule.

Mullin scored his tournament-leading fourth goal early in the first period, and the Americans scored three more in the second before Sweden found the scoresheet as USA easily disposed of the Swedes 5-1 in Penticton, B.C. USA is looking for its third-straight gold medal. They stand alone at the top of the standings with six points after two games and along with Switzerland will get a bye to the semifinals.

Canada West had a 2-0 lead midway through the game, but that quickly vanished by the end of the second period. Tied at 2 entering the third, Canada scored twice in the final frame to take the win. They will play Sweden on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

After a slow start, Ashton has 12 points in his last 10 games, including goals in his last two.

USA opened defense of their 2009 Gold medal with a convincing 6-1 win over Canada East. Lightning prospect Jimmy Mullin led the way for the Americans with a hat trick. He was originally credited with an assist on USA’s first goal, but it was later changed to his goal. The Fargo Force (USHL) forward followed that up with USA’s second goal, giving the Americans a 2-1 lead in the second period. He completed the hat trick in Penticton, B.C., with the USA’s final goal mid-way through the third period. (Hockey Canada photo)

Canada West found themselves down 3-0 going into the third period of their WJAC opener before mounting a furious comeback to send the game to overtime. Lighting prospect Brendan O’Donnell, playing on his home ice in Penticton, earned the primary assist on West’s game tying goal with just over 6 minutes to go in the game. The Swiss won on an overtime goal scored on the power play. West had taken a delay of game penalty in the closing seconds of the third period.
