CHL Game Night: 1-15-10

QMJHL

Baie-Comeau Drakkar 0 @ Moncton Wildcats 6
D Mark Barberio, MCT: 1-0-1, +4, 4 PIM, 3 SOG
Season Totals: 41 GP, 9-25-34, +24, 40 PIM

Barberio’s goal at the one-minute mark of the opening period turned out to be the game winner and made it three consecutive games in which he’s scored a goal. He has an eight game point streak (third longest active streak in the league) and has scored six of his nine goals in that span. Barberio (pictured) is fifth among QMJHL defensemen in assists, points, and plus/minus. He is ninth in goals.

LW/C Alex Hutchings, BAR: 0-0-0, -1, 2 PIM (roughing)
Season Totals: 42 GP, 26-23-49, +27, 36 PIM

Another big road win for Barrie. Hutchings hasn’t registered a point in four games, which is his longest scoreless stretch since his 2006-07 rookie year. Since Barrie continues to win, one would think the frustration level isn't too high.

Oshawa Generals 3 @ Sudbury Wolves 4
G Michael Zador, OSH: Did not play.
Season Totals: 28 GP, 11-14-2-1, 3.60 GAA, .894 sv%, 1 SO

With Sudbury: 10 GP, 2-2-4, -5, 6 PIM

G Michael Zador, OSH: 2 saves on 4 shots
Season Totals: 28 GP, 11-13-2-1, 3.60 GAA, .894 sv%, 1 SO

Zador started on the bench for the third straight game, but entered the contest when Kevin Bailie was pulled after giving up five goals on 27 shots. It’s been almost a month since Oshawa has given up less than three goals in a game. The Generals are in fourth in the East Division, five points ahead of Richard Panik, Kyle DeCoste and Belleville. Meanwhile, Sointu still hasn’t rejoined Sudbury after the WJCs because he recently had surgery in Finland for an undisclosed injury, according to the Sudbury Star. He is expected to rejoin the team in late January. Sudbury is in third in the Central Division.

Kevin Bailie, who played the last game for Oshawa, relieved Zador, but gave up three goals on five shots. DeCoste, on the other hand, remains hot, scoring for the second straight game. He’s within two of his career high for goals in a season (15), set last year with Brampton and Sault Ste. Marie. DeCoste's goal came against Zador.

G Michael Zador, OSH: Did not play.
Season Totals: 27 GP, 11-12-2-1, 3.46 GAA, .897 sv%, 1 SO

With Bulls: 16 GP, 8-7-15, +1, 11 PIM
With SSM: 13 GP, 2-1-3, -2, 20 PIM

DeCoste made his first return to the Soo after being traded from the Greyhounds earlier this year. It wasn’t the return he was hoping for as he was thrown out midway through the second period for elbowing an unsuspecting Tomas Rachunek in the head. Rachunek left the ice with a cut on his head and an apparent shoulder injury. SSM scored on the ensuing power play. Like it did when he was traded from Brampton to the Soo last year, DeCoste’s game has taken off since being traded. Up until Friday night he was producing at a point-per-game clip for the Bulls. He was named the team's Most Improved Player by the Belleville paper this week.

With Regina: 1 GP, 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM
With Lethbridge: 28 GP, 13-13-26, -8, 52 PIM

Ashton made his debut for Regina wearing No.25 and starting the game on a line next to super-prospect Jordan Eberle (Oilers 1/2008) and Matt Strueby (undrafted). The line produced one goal in the game, an unassisted marker by Eberle. The Pats' Eberle and Colton Teubert will not play again for Regina in 2009 as they leave to attend Canada's WJC camp. Both are locks to make the club. Ashton will not wait long to face his former club as he and the remaining Pats will take on Lethbridge Saturday night.
