Tammela scores first AHL goal, Crunch beat Devils

By Jeremy Houghtaling

It’s been a long road back for Jonne Tammela.

The Finnish rookie has been rehabbing in Syracuse since December 2016 as he recovered from three knee surgeries. Although there were some tough times, Tammela worked his way back into the Crunch lineup last week.

Now he’s starting to contribute on the scoresheet.

Tammela jammed in a rebound for his first North American pro goal Monday, as the Crunch shut out the Binghamton Devils, 3-0, at the Onondaga County War Memorial for their ninth straight victory.

“My first thing was I was really happy,” Tammela said of the goal. “I didn’t realize it went in. Everything was so fast. … It felt good and obviously it helped the team win, so I think that was the most important thing.”

Dominik Masin, Matthew Peca, and Jonne Tammela were the game's three stars.

With 16 points on his campaign, Masin has now more than doubled his points output from last season in 32 less games. He's also gone from -4 a season ago to a hefty +16 rating thus far this year. Peca, who may be the quiet favorite to be the next callup from the Crunch, is now riding a seven game points streak and has been brutally consistent most of the campaign. At the other end of the spectrum of great stories, Jonne Tammela (The Cobra!) comes off of three knee surgeries and pots his first AHL goal in his third game back.

Syracuse moves to within three points of second place Rochester with a game in hand and within five points, straight up, of North Division leader Toronto.

Tammela Looks to Get Head Start With Crunch

By Jeremy Houghtaling

Jonne Tammela stepped onto the ice for the first time in Syracuse Monday morning.

The Finnish forward, who arrived Saturday after signing an amateur tryout to finish this season with the Crunch, went through skating drills with a handful of teammates during the split practice at the Onondaga County War Memorial.

Tammela is hoping his stint in Syracuse gives him a head start in transitioning to the North American game next fall.

“I hope I can learn more about the system we play and more about North American hockey,” Tammela said. “It’s quite different in Europe, so it will be helpful for me.”
