NHL Game Night: 2-4-20 Golden Knights at Lightning

First Period
10:57 TB Point (19), (Kucherov, Cernak)
15:42 LV Carrier (6), (McNabb, Eakin)
17:57 TB Johnson (13), (Cirelli, Palat)

10:36 TB Stamkos (24), (Point, Kucherov)
19:15 TB Killorn (21), (Palat)(EN)

Vasilevskiy, Brayden Point, and Steven Stamkos were the game's three stars.

Quality win against a quality opponent, but 18 SOG a game isn't a recipe for sustainable success. The Lightning can get by here and there with their high skill level and when Vasilevskiy's in form, but there's room for improvement on tonight's performance overall.

Carter Verhaeghe was -1 with 1 shot and 1 hit in 10:05.

Mitchell Stephens was -1 with 4 shots and 1 hit in 12:40 and he was 50% on 16 draws.

This was another game where, in the past, the Lightning may have gotten themselves in trouble getting frustrated and overpressing and getting loose defensively. Maybe that happened a wee bit in the Second Period after the Lightning failed to get payoff for a very dominant First Period, but in general they remained patient and did the work.

Carter Verhaeghe had 1 hit in 10:16. Verhaeghe is now getting down to the nitty gritty, just two games away from graduation from prospect status on the site.

Mitchell Stephens had 1 blocked shot in 10:55 and was 75% on 8 draws. He's almost 57% on his draws through his first 24 NHL games, hence why he's sticking in the league at the moment.

Kind of a grindy, tight checking game where the Lightning were able to stay patient and manufacture a key greasy goal. That's good practice for the playoffs.

Mitchell Stephens was -2 in 9:51. He was 45% on 11 draws.

Obviously that's not the way you draw it up, and the first 25 minutes of this game looked like another study in the old chestnut that "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." Fortunately, the Lightning pulled themselves together after nearly falling down 3-0 and soon secured the final game of this, fifth 10-game segment of the season. They now have five insurance points in the bank for playoff pacing with three segments to play.

Carter Verhaeghe had 2 hits and 1 blocked shot in 10:41. Verhaeghe is now four games from graduating from prospect status on the website.

Mitchell Stephens had 2 shots and 2 hits in 11:11. He was also 67% on 12 draws. For comparison's sake, Stephens is still 19 games from graduation from prospect status, which seems do-able in 32 remaining regular season games, but it's clear this is the thinnest class of Bolt Prospects Alumni in 2019-2020 perhaps ever.
