Peca, Matthew

NCAA Game Night: 11-4-11

A streak reaches double digits for one player while another starts his season with a bang as all seven NCAA teams with Lightning prospects were in action.

Prospect of the Month (October)

Bolt Prospects would like to acknowledge one monster who has been mashing his way all through October. Some Bolt Prospects readers felt tricked this past week when we didn't name this prospect the Player of the Week, but we were holding a treat in reserve. True, there were several worthy honorable mentions who scared up some excitement along the way. There was the wolf man, Brett Connolly, who came out of nowhere to crack the Lightning's NHL roster. There was the evil genius, Mark Barberio, and his stylish 2 goals and 11 points in 10 games. And, there was the leprechaun, Matthew Peca, who got his own pot o' gold today when he was named the ECAC's Rookie of the Month.

But the nail in the coffin came when the AHL gave a certain power forward (sort of a pale Incredible Hulk) a minor award (hardly worth mention in the same breath as Bolt Prospects' Prospect of the Month).

Peca is ECAC's Top Rookie for October

Quinnipiac College's Matthew Peca was honored by ECAC Hockey with a first-ever Fischer Hockey Monthly Award - Rookie of the Month.

Peca, a freshman forward and seventh round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the summer, has had an impressive first month to his NCAA career with eight points (3 goals) in eight games. He has at least a point in the last seven games.

Last week, Peca was honored with the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week award.

Peca assisted on senior Scott Zurevinski's first period shorthanded goal to extend his point streak to eight games.

Peca was also named ECAC rookie of the week for the week ending October 25. He helped the Bobcats to a 2-1-0 week after scoring in each of Quinnipiac's three games and also picked up an assist in the Bobcats win over Bentley. He ranks tied for third in total points among all rookies in NCAA Division I with 9 and first among those in the ECAC.

Prospect of the Week (10.23.11)

This season Bolt Prospects introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their on-ice contributions. There are no trophies or plaques or engraved gold teeth awarded, but we’re fairly certain this will be printed off and end up in a frame somewhere. Quite simply, we wanted to highlight prospects throughout the year to help fans get better acquainted with the next round of Lightning stars while recognizing the prospect’s achievement on the ice.

This week’s BP Prospect of the Week award goes to … Matthew Peca, Quinnipiac Bobcats.
