Volkov, Alexander

NHL Preseason Game Night: 9-24-19 Lightning at Panthers

Not a great outcome as Lightning preseason starts to wind down.

TB-3
FLA-6

Andrei Vasilevskiy allowed 6 goals on 24 shots for the loss. We'll view this in the most optimistic light possible: best to have the clunker and get the rust off now before the games actually matter.

First Period
15:53 TB Volkov (1), (Cirelli, Killorn)
19:04 FLA Vatrano (1), (Borgstrom, Ekblad)(SH)

Second Period
2:12 FLA Barkov (1), (Huberdeau, Dadonov)
3:54 TB Cirelli (1), (Shattenkirk, Volkov)
4:55 FLA Barkov (2), (unassisted)
5:14 FLA Huberdeau (1), (Barkov, Dadonov)
14:11 FLA Toninato (1), (Hunt, Ekblad)
16:35 TB Sergachev (1), (Verhaeghe, Palat)(PP)

Third Period
3:53 FLA Malgin (1), (Trocheck, Hoffman)

Carter Verhaeghe had a helper, but was -3 with 1 shot and 1 blocked shot in 13:59.

Alexander Volkov had a goal and an assist and was +2 with 1 shot and 1 hit in 12:15. In his recent run of play, you've seen what Volkov brings to the table: a 200 foot game and a very formidable, NHL-caliber shot.

NHL Preseason Game Night: 9-21-19 Lightning at Predators

Second choice Lightning lineup takes Predators to OT.

TB-4
NSH-5 (OT)

Scott Wedgewood allowed 5 goals on 44 shots for the OT loss.

First Period
6:31 NSH Forsberg (1), (Josi, Johansen)(PP)
8:36 TB Gaunce (1), (Joseph)

Second Period
9:18 TB Verhaeghe (1), (Cirelli)
12:09 NSH Tolvanen (1), (Wilkens, Ekholm)

Third Period
4:32 TB Cernak (1), (Gaunce, Stephens)
13:32 NSH Arvidsson (1), (Duchene, Johansen)(PP)
14:18 TB Verhaeghe (2), (C. Foote)
19:56 NSH Duchene (1), (Arvidsson, Josi)

Overtime
1:39 NSH Pitlick (1), (unassisted)

This was a large contingent of the Lightning's Syracuse Crunch affiliate pitted against Nashville's NHL'ers, which resulted in a 44-21 shot disparity for the good guys. Still, they came within just 4 seconds of stealing the victory.

Once again, fairly obvious that Dominik Masin (23:02) and Alexander Volkov (21:14) are getting an extended look from the coaching staff. Expect Carter Verhaeghe to continue to work his way into the discussion, too, after having 2 goals and a team high 5 shots tonight.

NHL Preseason Game Night: 9-20-19 Predators at Lightning

Lightning offense breaks its slumber in Third Period comeback win.

NSH-1
TB-3

Curtis McElhinney allowed 1 goal on 32 shots for the win.

First Period
15:32 NSH Jarnkrok (1), (Bonino, Turris)(PP)

Second Period
NO SCORING

Third Period
9:30 TB Volkov (1), (Verhaeghe, Yan)(PP)
19:21 TB Kucherov (1), (Palat, Johnson)
19:44 TB Kucherov (2), (Palat)(EN)

Nikita Kucherov, Alexander Volkov and McElhinney were the game's three stars.

Shots were even at 32-32 for the game. Note the significant ice time for Volkov (again) and Carter Verhaeghe as well as a lot of ice time for righty defenseman prospect Ben Thomas (20:30). In all three cases, chronologically older prospects that should be among the next in line for spots in Tampa Bay, if in the cards.

NHL Preseason Game Night: 9-18-19 Lightning at Hurricanes

Lightning still looking to light the lamp in preseason.

TB-0
CAR-2

Martin Spencer allowed 1 goal on 13 shots for the loss before giving way to Zach Fucale who allowed 1 goal on 11 shots the rest of the way.

First Period
NO SCORING

Second Period
4:53 CAR Lorentz (1), (Gauthier, Forsling)

Third Period
5:06 CAR Bishop (1), (unassisted)

The Lightning actually led shots on goal in the contest 24-21, so it wasn't the squash last night's game was.

Nolan Foote drew good reviews for his NHL preseason debut, but for readers of the tea leaves, take a look at Dominik Masin and his hefty 20:23 of ice time and Alexander Volkov and his 18:15. Two players clearly getting looked at.
