Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

Quebec Remparts 8 @ Acadie-Bathurst Titan 3

W Nikita Kucherov, QUE: 1-2-3, +1, 0 PIM, 6 SOG, 1 Hit, *Third Star*
Season totals: 3 GP, 2-4-6, +2, 2 PIM

Kucherov (pictured) had a goal and two assists to give him six points in three games to start his North American hockey career. His line combined for 10 points on the night as Mikhail Grigorenko (Sabres) had four assists and Adam Erne (2013) had a hat trick. Kucherov was third star for the second-straight game. It’s his turn to sit out the next game as fellow import player Nick Sorensen sat out on Friday night. The Remparts can only dress two per game. Grigorenko is the other import on the roster.

Oshawa Generals 1 @ Guelph Storm 4

C/W Tanner Richard, GUE: 0-2-2, +1, 0 PIM
Season totals: 14 GP, 2-19-21, +7, 36 PIM

Richard extended his point streak to 12 games with two assists against Oshawa on Friday night. In a game broadcast on NHL Network, Richard earned his first assist when he slid a pass back to Matt Finn at the point and Finn’s shot banked off the dasher of the end boards and hit goaltender Daniel Altshuller in the shoulder before falling over the goal line. Richard’s second assist came on the power play when he executed a give-and-go with Jets pick Scott Kosmachuck. Richard fed Kosmachuck in the slot for a grade-A scoring chance.

The Petes broke up Spencer Martin’s shutout bid with 13 seconds left in regulation. Lightning prospect goaltender Andrei Vasilevski was drafted by Mississauga, but the Steelheads were not able to bring him to the CHL this season.

D Slater Koekkoek, PBO: 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM

Prospect Watching

There will be three Lightning prospects on television Friday night: Guelph (Tanner Richard, No. 27) on NHL Network, North Dakota (Brendan O’Donnell, No. 21) on NESN, and Minnesota (Adam Wilcox, No. 32) on Fox Sports North.

Prospect of the Week: October 30, 2012

This week we continue our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their recent contributions on and off the ice.

This week’s winner is watched closer than any other Lightning prospect.

The Prospect of the Week for October 30 is … Slater Koekkoek, defenseman, Peterborough (OHL – Canada)

The only reaction stronger than the surprise many Lightning prospect fans felt when the Lightning chose Slater Koekkoek with the 10th overall pick in June’s draft was the concern they felt when the 2-way defenseman went down in his first preseason game.

In other words, though the pick may have surprised them, they’re behind him 100 percent.

NA Juniors Game Night: 10-28-12

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

Gatineau Olympiques 1 @ Quebec Remparts 2

W Nikita Kucherov, QUE: 0-2-2, +2, 2 PIM (interference), 4 SOG, 0 Hits, *Third Star*
Season totals: 2 GP, 1-2-3, +1, 2 PIM

Kucherov (pictured, LaPresse photo) was back in the Remparts lineup and earned the primary assist on both Quebec’s goals. The Remparts came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Olympiques, 2-1. Coach Patrick Roy seems to be rotating his three import players (teams can only play two). Today, Sabres first rounder Mikhail Grigorenko sat in the press box while Kucherov and Nick Sorensen (2013) played. Roy will eventually have to trade one, unless the lockout ends and Grigorenko bolts to the NHL. Grigorenko has 24 points in 15 games this season. Sorensen has 14 in 15.

Ontario Hockey League

Sarnia Sting 4 @ Brampton Battalion 1

D Dylan Blujus, BRAM: 0-0-0, -1, 4 PIM (tripping, slashing)
Season totals: 16 GP, 1-5-6, -10, 18 PIM

Brampton scored just one goal for the second straight game – both big losses. On Sunday they outshot visiting Sarnia, 31-15, but gave up four goals. Montreal first rounder Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and two assists for Steven Stamkos’ former junior club.

Windsor Spitfires 2 @ Owen Sound Attack 5

D Jake Dotchin, OS: 0-0-0, +2, 0 PIM
Season totals: 14 GP, 1-2-3, E, 14 PIM

Chris Marchese (undrafted) had two goals for Windsor. Dotchin has one point in his last 13 games and none in his last four.

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 6 @ Guelph Storm 2

C/W Tanner Richard, GUE: 0-1-1, +1, 9 PIM (boarding, instigating, fighting)
Season totals: 13 GP, 2-17-19, +6, 36 PIM

Richard extended his point streak to 11 games with a third period assist. The game was chippy, to say the least, and Richard was in the middle of it again. He was suspended earlier this year for instigating a fight in the last five minutes of a game. Today he started a fight in the second period. Richard continues to lead the OHL in assists (tied with Nick Cousins of the Soo) and he’s seventh in penalty minutes, 10 behind Oshawa’s Scott Sabourin. You don’t see the assist-PIM combination too often.

Peterborough Petes 3 @ Oshawa Generals 2 (SO)

D Slater Koekkoek, PBO: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM
Season totals: 14 GP, 2-9-11, -6, 12 PIM

Are the Petes turning the corner? Peterborough, who has struggled for much of the season, won their second straight game after five straight one-goal defeats. They’re playing competitive hockey and were rewarded with two wins this weekend. Slater Koekkoek has points in three straight games. The Petes’ captain is second on the team in scoring.
