AHL Game Night: 12-9-17 Crunch at Senators

New Crunchning Death Star vaporizes Sens to run streak to nine.

Connor Ingram stopped all 18 shots he faced for the shutout victory, his first shutout as a pro.

Alexander Volkov, Mitchell Stephens, and Ingram were the game's three stars.

Tonight you started to see the quality of the depth the Crunch have, prospect-wise, start to show. This isn't a team that has top scoring line NHL caliber skill on it, but everywhere you look there's a really high energy player who is a strong 200 foot player and plays a strong possession game. Cirelli and Joseph, in particular, had their way in the previous two games. Tonight was Volkov and Stephens' turn.

I'll also throw some love Dominik Masin's way tonight, as he had two assists and has been really good since joining the Crunch after some injuries nagged him in camp. He's formed a very solid pair with rookie Erik Cernak, and the mind wanders to thoughts of whether that may be a pair in the NHL in a couple of years time.

Syracuse is now 4 games over .500 and sits just 3 points back of Rochester for second in the North Division after the Americans dropped their game a shootout tonight.

SYR- Joseph, Loney

Ty Loney and Adam Erne were the game's first and second stars.

Syracuse came within an eyelash of seeing their winning streak go up in smoke in a frustrating Third Period, but Adam Erne's tally with 48 seconds to go kept hope alive. Syracuse actually had a staggering 25-7 shot advantage through 40 minutes before Belleville started playing score effects hockey in the Third Period to pull ahead on the scoreboard, if only for a moment.

Thankfully, Syracuse's late game heroics moved them to a 10-9-1-2 record for the campaign and above .500 after banging their heads against the wall in multiple 1 goal losses the first two months of the year.

16:50 SYR Peca (2), (Erne)

Third Period

Carter Verhaeghe and Matthew Peca were the game's first and second stars. After going 19 games without a goal, Peca now has a goal in two of his last three tilts. He also has a gaudy 6 points over that three game span.

Syracuse moves to 2 games under .500 with the victory. If they can get their record back to level, then the push to get back into playoff contention can begin.

With the departure of Leighton and McGinn in the Domingue deal and the release of Akeson from his PTO, Syracuse has opted to get even younger as they attempt to find a winning formula to get out of the cellar this season. If you're looking for a silver lining from tonight, all Crunch scoring was contributed by prospects. Cold comfort, but that's something.

Lightning goalie prospect Connor Ingram and Beast goalie Andrew D'Agostini put on goaltending clinic Sunday afternoon at the Powerade Centre in Brampton. The two netminders allowed just one goal each and made a combined 82 saves en route to a shootout duel. D'Agostini, the ex-Peterborough Pete goalie and former teammate of Lightning prospects Matthew Spencer and Slater Koekkoek, turned away all 4 Adirondack shooters including Syracuse depth forwards Ty Loney and Shane Conacher. Ingram finally yielded a goal on the fourth Brampton shooter, but still earned Second Star honors for his performance. For the weekend, Ingram played a total of 185 minutes and turned away 95 of 99 shots, while backstopping the Thunder to earning 5 of the possible 6 points on the weekend. Loney and Conacher once again combined on the power play 40 seconds into the 3rd to knot the score at 1-1. Now that the weekend three-in-three is completed, it is expected that Ingram and Spencer will be recalled to Syracuse.

With only one game on the weekend docket for the Syracuse Crunch, the organization reassigned Lightning prospect goalie Connor Ingram and defenseman Matthew Spencer to the Adirondack Thunder for the weekend to get some playing time. Ingram responded with a 33 save effort, allowing just one goal on the road in Kalamazoo, earning First Star honors. Syracuse depth forward Ty Lomey earned Second Star honors with a power play goal in the third period. The Thunder draw the rematch against the K-Wings Saturday night, before a matinee Sunday in Brampton against the Beast.

This is a young team. I'm not surprised they've taken a step back from the veteran-heavy team of a season ago. But, you'd have hoped to have seen a little more progress to this point. A .375 winning percentage is obviously well below the standard for this organization, at the moment.

Connor Ingram allowed 2 goals on 5 shots before giving way to veteran Michael Leighton who allowed 1 goal on 19 shots for the dreaded backdoor loss.

Maybe it shouldn't be surprising the Crunch have struggled to produce wins with the amount of roster turnover that happened over the offseason and the number of veterans that have been replaced by rookie pros. That doesn't make it sting any less, though.

After a healthy dose of one goal losses, the Crunch finally picked themselves off the mat against the 0-6-0 Thunderbirds. Is the win impressive given the quality of opponent? Who cares. It was necessary, and the team got it.
