NHL Game Night: 12-4-18 Lightning at Red Wings

Yet another franchise that can't get out of their way against the Lightning no matter what the odds are gets demoralized by Tampa Bay.

TB-6
DET-5 (SO)

Eddie Pasquale allowed 5 goals on 24 shots before stopping 2 of 3 in the Shootout for the win in his first NHL start. I'm on the record as saying I'd have given Connor Ingram this start because he's the legit NHL prospect. I don't think Pasquale did much to make me a liar the way he leaked some soft goals and big rebounds all game, but in the end he stepped it up in the SO and got the victory.

Mathieu Joseph was the game's second star. Well deserved.

Tampa Bay's on the downside of a back-to-back playing their organization's fourth string goaltender, in essence, and Detroit had a pair of two goal leads in this game. Easiest thing in the world would've been for the Lightning to just get back on the bus. But, the depth and the want-to still overcame all the obstacles and picked up another two points.

Joseph with a cream of the crop stat line: 2 goals, 1 assist, +4, 2 shots, and 1 hit in 12:15. His most impactful NHL game thus far. Made an outstanding individual play on his first goal on a one handed chip over the netminder that had shades of that classic Vincent Lecavalier goal against the Thrashers back in the day. Got a tap in from a foot out after Gourde forced a turnover behind the cage and Joseph had an open net to shoot into. And then he set up the big SH tying goal by Paquette by sucking two defenders to him with his speed and hustle so the puck could squirt to the wide open chance for Dump Truck. Tour de force. He's flirting with a 20 goal pace and he's only playing 11-12 minutes a game.

Anthony Cirelli was -1 with 1 shot and 1 hit in 14:57 and he was 50% on 10 draws.

Erik Cernak had 1 shot, 1 hit, and 1 blocked shot in a personal high 21:55 of ice time. Played well soaking up the extra responsibility tonight.

NHL Game Night: 11-29-18 Sabres at Lightning

Dump Truck avenges McDonagh.

BUF-4
TB-5

Louis Domingue... was not good, but he made a handful of critical saves in the Third Period to limp over the finish line and get the W. Allowing 4 goals on 22 shots is not a stat line you typically can get away with, needless to say. Those second and fourth goals allowed were just not acceptable. The second goal allowed that climbed up and over him was just laughably bad.

Third Period
2:29 BUF Thompson (4), (Mittelstadt)
4:12 TB Stamkos (8), (Hedman, Kucherov)(PP)
14:19 TB Paquette (5), (Sergachev, Palat)

Cedric Paquette and Nikita Kucherov were the game's first and second stars, respectively. Fitting for Dump Truck to get the GWG and rub some salt in the wound of a Sabres game that stepped over the line taking Ryan McDonagh out of the game and stepping over the line physically on more than one occasion. Paquette gives as good as he gets, and then scalded the winning snapper on the rush to put away the upstarts from upstate New York.

Complete possession dominance by the Lightning led to a wide disparity in shots and scoring chances, but goaltending can be a great equalizer when you get it... or don't get it. I'll be interested to see if Connor Ingram gets his first NHL game Saturday to give Domingue a little rest.

Describe armageddon in eight words: "The official artisanal cheese of the Buffalo Sabres." What?

Mathieu Joseph was -2 with 2 penalty minutes, 1 shot, and 2 hits in 11:30.

Anthony Cirelli was +2 with 1 shot and 1 hit in 11:33.

Erik Cernak was -1 with a helper, 3 shots, and 1 blocked shot in 16:59.

Ingram and Cory Conacher were the game's first and third stars.

Alex Barre-Boulet quietly has assembled a seven game point streak that continued tonight. He's just a touch below a point a game at 15 through 17 appearances.

Syracuse is now 9-0-1 in their last ten games, which has propelled them into second place in the North Division. They sit three points back of division leader Rochester with a couple of games in hand and they've moved three points clear now of Cleveland and Utica in the process.
