Taylor Hall (likely 2010 first or second pick) scored at 2:35 of overtime to help the defending OHL and Memorial Cup champs steal Game 1 of the OHL Finals. Barrie had 2-0 and 3-2 leads, but couldn’t hold on, losing just their second game of the playoffs. Hutchings, who had been operating at a point-per-game pace in the playoffs, was held off the scoresheet. Game 2 is Thursday in Barrie.

Nicola Riopel (Flyers 5/09) registered his third shutout of the playoffs and Moncton got a goal and assist from Lightning prospect Mark Barberio (pictured) to put the Wildcats within one game of advancing to the QMJHL Finals. Barberio’s fifth goal of the playoffs gave Moncton a 2-0 lead in the second period. He currently leads all defensemen in Q playoff scoring with 15 points. His seven shots on goal in Game 4 led the Wildcats. Moncton can close out the series in Game 5 in Drummondville on Friday.

Moncton defenseman Brandon Gormley was scoreless, even, and had two shots on goal in the game. Gormley Playoff Totals: 14 GP, 0-13-13, +8, 2 PIM.

Hutchings scored 14 seconds after Stefan Della Rovere (Capitals 7/08) scored the game’s opener to open up an early 2-0 lead and help send the Colts on to a 4-2 Game 5 win and 4-1 series win. Della Rovere would add another goal to earn First Star honors. The Eastern Conference champion and Bobby Hull Trophy-winning Colts will now await the winner of Kitchener-Windsor (currently 3-1 Kitchener) to play for the Robertson Cup in the OHL Finals. Hutchings’ goal broke a personal seven game goal-less drought and two-game streak without a point. He finished the St. Mike’s series with a goal and two assists in five games. The Colts are 12-1 in the playoffs.

Barrie avenged a road loss to the Majors earlier in the series by beating them 3-1 in Game 4 in Mississauga. Barrie can advance to the OHL Finals on Wednesday when Game 5 is played in Barrie where the Colts are 6-0 in the playoffs. Hutchings was scoreless for the second straight game and “fell†to a point-per-game average in the playoffs. He has two assists in the four games this series. The last time Hutchings went two consecutive games without a point was Barrie’s first two games in February. He then went on a 12-game point streak. He has gone seven games without a goal, his longest streak of the season by three games.

Hutchings saw his point streak (going back to the regular season) end at 10 games, but Barrie took the lead in the Eastern Conference Finals, 2-1. Luke Pither (undrafted) scored two goals for the Colts to erase a 1-0 Majors lead and help Barrie to victory. Game 4 is Monday in Mississauga. On the other side, Kitchener defeated Windsor 5-2 in Game 2 to take a 2-0 series lead over the defending Memorial Cup champs.

Diminutive 5’-8†netminder Drew Owsley (undrafted) earned First Star honors for the Americans. Game 3 is Tuesday in Vancouver. On the other side, No.1 Calgary defeated Memorial Cup host Brandon 3-2 to tie their series at one.

The Wildcats struck first in their QMJHL semifinal series, beating the Volts on the road, 5-3. Drummondville had won 17 straight home games. Barberio didn’t score in the game, but reportedly made one of its most important defensive plays when he batted a shot destined for the back of the net out of mid-air as it was crossing the goal line. Game 2 is Sunday night in Drummondville.
Draft Watch
Moncton defenseman Brandon Gormley was minus-1 with three shots on goal. Gormley is regarded as one of the best defenseman in the upcoming draft and could fall to the Lightning at No.6. Gormley playoff totals: 11 GP, 0-11-11, +7, 0 PIM.
